I've been looking at some of the jewelry posted on this site, and I notice that the stone is inevitably drilled to attach to a necklace or whatever.
This detracts from the stone to me. Would it be possible to glue the stone to some piece of hardware in order to attach to the necklace? Or maybe drilling part way into the back of the stone and glueing the hardwareinto the hole for a more secure connection.
Am I being naive? Would this look better?

Hey Toad I use 330 epoxy, it's a two part epoxy, but youv'e got to get the mix very even or it won't dry hard, stay tacky. It's also good to store in the fridge when not in use. Here's some tghings I've done cookie

That is a good option too, Cookie. It just seems wrong to me to drill a whole in a beautifully polished gem.

Toad, My fear is breaking the stone when drilling. I don't have a drill press, just an hand held dremel. I broke a piece of rose quartzs (that was for my step daughter) a while back and the epoxy just makes sense to me. This way I can choose the necklace or just sell the set stone for the buyer to choose.

Cookie- Your work is beautiful! Thanks for the tips. I believe you've inspired me to try my hand at some jewelry. Love the earrings! I've got some very nice stones and some beach glass. If they work, I'll post some pix.

Personal opinion ... I don't think it looks bad to have a stone drilled, especially when you look at the nice wire wrap with the bead. If it was a hole all chipped up maybe but when it's done nice and cleanly it looks great.

i tend to agree with Toad, even tho i drill holes in stones for attachment. i prefer the top drilled post mounted stones for looks, although there is something primitively alluring to thru drilled holes....i think humans have been drilling holes in stones for many hundreds if not thousands of years...haha, my opinion, of course.
the nice thing about the thru drilled holes with the wire wrap attachment is you aren't relying on epoxy to hold the stone to the post....
i'm intending on taking a silversmithing course in the spring (the local school here doesn't offer a winter term) so i can do more professional type of mountings.
meanwhile, onward drilling rockhounds!

Yeah, Cher, I allways worry the epoxy might not hold and most of my stuff is being purchased by tourists, so I can't give a gaurantee. I would also prefer the top drilling to the hole through method, mostly because I can't seem to master wire wrapping! And thanks for the compliments cookie

Hello Toad,
I have to side with Cher ... if the hole is properly drilled and finished ... it is perfectly acceptable in my opinion.
Now if you are talking about a 30,000 emerald that has been exquisitely faceted ... well, that is a whole other ball of wax!

Now if you are talking about a 30,000 emerald that has been exquisitely faceted ... well, that is a whole other ball of wax! John I understand that people like the drilled hole. But even a nice clean one, like I've seen on this site, looks wrong to me. I just don't like it - my opinion. I started this thread not to put down the practice, but to see what other options were out there. To each their own.
