For those of you interested in Serpentine, if you ever get to travel to Jade Cove below Monterey, CA there is a lot on the beach. I was thinking of taking this home with me, ......but.... My grandson just couldn't hold up his side when we tried to carry it. Here is a closeup of one of the pieces lying on the beach. Bob

Nice rock there. You should get Tony to help you carry that up the path. ;D Steve

Now you see why it's sometimes difficult to distinguish the difference between the jade and the serpentine when you're beach combing down there.

Tony was there with us but he was looking for the "real" jade as well as stepping around the elephant seal sleeping on the beach. Bob

This was taken last spring when the seals were mating. There is an island up the coast where they mate. The older, larger males run the young ones like this one off. The young ones go down the coast and climb up the beach to sleep and pout. If you don't try to approach too close (within a few feet) they don't really care much. This attitude almost lead to their extinction because they were so easy to kill. Since their protection many years ago, they have been quite successful in reestablishing their numbers. When they are fully grown they are quite ugly with a very pronounced elephant-like snout. This one is about 1/2 grown and he is about 14 feet long and weighs maybe 1200 lbs. Bob
