What type of gem is a saphaire? If you are referring to saphires, I do tumble them. I have had good results, however I do this to seperate the gem quality from the lessor grade stones. In the thread, tumbling emeralds and saphires, there is a good deal of information. Mainly, they take longer to get good results than other stones. They are really hard, and need looking after. The gem grade shows up after the coarse tumble. I go no further with those in the tumbler. The stars show up with the prepolish phase, and I cull those then. I have cut cabachons and put them in prepolish and final polish phases with other stones. I do the final polish for two weeks.
