Hi, Brian here, 38 in Glendale. I've been reading here for the past couple weeks or so in anticipation of my Christmas gift, a Thumler model B! Can't wait to set up and get started.. hopefully by this weekend I'll get my first batch going. It's been wonderful to get tips here and see all the awsome pics!

Hi Desertdweller! I'm near 59th ave and Bell.. yes not far at all! I've been collecting some pretty interesting chalcedony and opal geodes out near Lake Pleasant lately and pass through Sun City on the way. Couldn't ask for nicer weather right now eh? Thanks for the welcome!

Hi again and thanks all! Desertdweller I try to get out at least once a week. This last Thursday I took my kids and went and found that green quartz (AZ Jasper) site down near Maricopa. We picked up a lot of great specimens running a wide range of shades of green. It was a heck of a haul out of there but it was a wonderful trip and my kids really had a blast! This coming weekend my gal and I are planning a trip over to Bouse to hunt for agate and jasper, and hopefully find some nice chryscolla and malochite up around the Buckskin Mountains (Planet mine area). BAZ, ixnay on the oh-snay lol. I lived up there for 16 years and had my share of shoveling, scraping windshields and cutting firewood. I DO miss those nice summers though. Hey I dig your website.. I found it quite a while back before I tumbled.. er stumbled apon this place. Flag High Eagle here btw Dan and Steph thanks for the warm welcomes! This place rocks!!!

Hi Beefjello, I missed this before. I went to the Maricopa site last May and nearly killed myself in the heat. How far would you say it was to walk from the road to the site? It sure wasn't any quarter mile like the guide book claimed!

Hi Puppie! I'd say the walk in is about a mile and the walk out is about 5 miles lol. When we were there it was overcast, maybe in the 50's or so.. perfect weather. And it still kicked my butt! I can't imagine doing it with 100 plus degree heat.. you're quite a trooper!!

Yep, getting a little snow today. I've been to Williams and then Valle (on the way to the canyon) on my route today and they are getting it too.

Beef, I was not a trooper I was insane. In my own defense, I will say that the guidebook described the walk in as about a quarter mile over flat terrain. I'd say it was closer to a mile and a half and your estimate is probably the most reliable of the three. It's flat, yes, except for the washes and dodging the thorny things. At least I had the good sense to treat it as "grab and run" once I reached the site. It's unfortunate that I couldn't have been more selective, but on the other hand, there was some pressure to pick up clearly worthwhile stuff. That led to large pieces and there's always the ones that you see on the way out that you just can't leave behind. I walked out of there with 50 pounds of rocks. One rock bag was hanging from my left shoulder and digging a hole on the outside of my left thigh that I wasn't entirely aware of until later -- just that it was sore. I was in bad shape when I got out and then had to get on a plane back home after returning the rental car. I washed myself in the washroom at the supermarket in the town at the crossroads and changed clothes, bought a cooler to store the rocks in to check onto the plane. I got all this stuff to the checkin along with luggage containing my rock equipment so I had like 3 pieces, southwest airlines gave me a hard time about being in the rapid line with a luggage cart, I was really having problems, and when I got there the cooler was overweight -- this is how I know I carried out 50 lbs of rocks. I had to put green rocks in my other suitcases with clothes and stuff. After all this stress, I got to the gate and found that my flight was delayed. The time of the delay was at first unknown and then became 30 minutes that ultimately turned into 5 hours...so imagine being there in shorts and a tank top from the desert with your sunburn and a weeping thigh wound. The air conditioning gets colder and colder.
The jury's still out as to whether the green rocks were worth it.
