I bought a well used 12' slab saw on Friday..not sure who the manufacturer is. It has an autofeed clamp and cross feed but the autofeed motor seems to be bad or the wiring is shot, not sure which yet. Does anyone know where I might find an autofeed motor if this one is bad?
Also, I'd like to find out what the experts on RTH recommend for cutting oil and saw blades. I've seen several types and not sure what to get. I'd like to get a nice blade at a reasonable price (trying to keep it under $160.00). I have some ideas but I want to find out what you all think first!
Thanks, Dan

can you post a pic of it ?
Dan, on my 18" saw I use a blue blazer blade --- you might want to check out the "rayteck blazer blades" --they have different colors for different thicknesses and uses --anyway I have got good use out of mine -- even if it was a little more than the 160 you would prob out use it than to get a cheaper one then have it not last long ( the 18" runs about 240 but the 12" should be cheaper)--- as for the motor -- try "grainger's" (?) (their catlog is about 2" thick)-- I sure they would have a website too -- we have one here in peoria and they can match up almost any motor -- if you have the tag still on it where you know the rpm or motor numbers -- the auto feed motors usually turn about 45/50 rpm and you can reduce that with a 3 way pulley if you want for the oil -- I don't even know what mine is as I got a 1/2 barrel when I got my saw 30 years ago -- still have some --there was a 55 gal drum on ebay here while back in ohio that didn't get a 25 dollar bid that was the amagalum(?) made for rock cutting -- I wanted to get it but figured it would cost about $300 for me to go get it --and I didn't need it -- just a great buy !!

Dan, Good-luck on your new saw...your gonna love it when you get it up and runnin'. I have a 14" and I LOVE IT! I haven't bought any blades for it, but need to really soon. The guy that gave it to me, who has been doing Lapidary for 55 years, told me he has used Diesel for 55 years without a problem. It's CHEAP and it WORKS> The only drawback that I have found is that it is really stinky and hard to get the smell off. But when your living on a budget, you gotta do what you gotta do. It works just fine for me. Steve

Thanks fellers - I took some pics before I tore it down and will post 'em when I return home from Denver. It's like some kind of cruel torture to be here in Denver and stuck in a class room. John - The drive motor looks like it might be a Lortone 'cause the housing is painted with what looks like Lortone blue.. I'll contact Shawn and maybe send him a picture of it to see if he can replace it for me. I'll have to replace the wiring harness anyway so hopefully that's what the problem is. If Shawn doesn't have a replacement I'll check the Graingers catalogue. Can't wait to get that baby up and running...I have so much rough that I haven't worked yet 'cause it's to big to slab on the WorkForce andI don't want to take a hammer to it! I'll be sure to post pics of the refurb process so that future slabers can benifit from my experience. Thanks Again!!!

another good source for motors is www.surpluscenter.comwhat you need is an AC gearmotor with the same final speed (slightly slowere would be fine) and the same output shaft diameter. then you will just have to make a bracket. good luck, jerry

Thanks again all,
I discovered a few things about the saw as I disassembled and got it cleaned up. The Jig (motor driven feed with side feed clamp) Has a Sears Robuck(sic) tag riveted to it so I'm guessing it was purchased from a Sears catalogue many many years ago. The housing is home made from heavy guage steel. No telling where the arbour came from but it seems to be in good shape as well as the motor.
I'm just about finished re-assembling after applying several coats of Rustoleum blue metal flake followed by a couple of coats of clear. LOL...
I'll post some pictures soon....

I'm almost finished!!! I was able to finish the wiring with some help from my stepfather and we also made a lexan hood. I'm shoopping for a blade right now and I'm leaning towards the Rayteck Yellow blazer which is the replacement for the red blazer. Here's a link to CyberRockHounds Rayteck page: www.cyberrockhound.com/raytech_blazer_blades.htm#GOLDI'll post some pics when I finish with the details... Thanks again for the advice everyone. Dan
