Hey all just figured i'd post something about my tumbler incident this morning. I tried to go the cheaper route to use as a secondary tumbler to polish only with. Bought a 3lber for 26.99 by a company called chicago. Lets just say it ran for less than 5 days before the belt snapped. I opened up the motor housing, and there was rubber literally everywhere ....I've never ever in all my years of working with belt driven tools seen something where down as fast as this. Mind you I did buy this brand new. Just a fair warning to anyone...I learned my lesson with tumblers you absolutely get what you pay for...I'll most likely be ordering another qt66. And dismantling this chicago junkbox and perhaps making a larger tumbler out of it.

I have one of those, Mine lasted longer than that....but;
The bearing on the front of the motor siezed after only 3 months of use..its noisey..and I guess there was a reason it came with 3 extra belts.
I will never buy another one...I will probbly never buy another Thumlers either..I dont like the drum design of the 3lb.

yeah, I'm coming to realise that Lortone tumblers are definately the way to be. I've heard that Covington aren't that bad, but I don't have first hand experience. So ya never know

Greetings All,
Coveington Engineering has a triple barrel 40-pounder, I believe, for about $600. Three 40-lb barrels at a time, that could come in very handy. I've also got a quote from a company on Long Island for grit:
Grit 46/70 $56.00 50 lb pail Grit 60/90 $59.00 50 lb Pail Grit 120/220 $70.00 50 lb Pail Grit 400 $110.00 50 lb Pail Grit 600 $120.00 50 lb Pail
Now I just have to figure out shipping...

Hmm a tripple 40lber...*drool* You could produce like 240 lbs of stone with that per month...
And nice price on the grit....I might consider buying that and just hoard piling it.

Hey, hey, hey. Do not forget the Cerium! I have also used sandblasting grit for extended periods. Only needed a perpolish with 600 and final. I ran a single load for 60 days.

I also bought one of the el-cheapo tumblers and the belt did snap in about a week and the spare belt snapped in 4 days so I bought a couple of O-rings that were about the same size and they have been running for the last 3 months no problem. For me the drum spins a little fast but it seems to work otherwise. The drum is a little small but doesn't leak. It will get you started until the bug really bites, then you will want to move up.

I dissasembled the 3lber by chicago earlier and have figured out why the belt snaps so simple...the belt wheel is set just a bit too far away from the drive shaft, and when th belt turns there is too much tension on it making it snap easy. I pulled out the whole motor assemble with switch and the driveshaft rods. I'm going to Lowest sunday and picking myself up some galvanized sheet metal, and going to make my own frame for the tumbler and just mount everything back on and change the motor assemble over to use the same belt that most cars use for their alternators. I think this will be stronger and work more effectively...I'll keep an update on how this goes.
