Hi everyone, Don Roberts from Ohio here. I'm new to the group and to tumbling. Nice site! I am a flintknapper (arrowhead maker) and have been knapping for about 7 years. There is a fair amount of waste during this process and I thought tumbling would be a good way to turn waste rock into gems. I just picked up a used Thumbler Model B, 15 lb tumbler from e-bay and some grit from gemsusa.com. I have a lot to learn, and a lot of experimenting to do, but that is the fun part. Ya got to love rocks! I just started a batch of Mook jasper from Australia (Mookaite) mixed with some other rock such as Flintridge that all seem to be fairly close in hardness. Can't wait to see the results. I'm a little worried about some of the shapes, as some of the pieces are broken slabs and may want to slide rather than tumble? I tried to put a good mix of sizes and shapes in, but will have to wait and see what happens. Take care everyone and talk to you later, Don

Hi Don - Welcome to the board. On the worry of the flats you have, you can minimize this by sticking rubber on the inside of the barrels. www.rocktumblinghobby.com/rock-tumbling-photos1/qz3.jpgShows mine (just about) two strips one on each side of the barrel "trips" the stones and keeps them round. If they start flat though - yes - its a tough one get round. Let us know how the flint goes. Cheers Andrew

Thanks for the welcome and the advice Andrew. I just checked the load and they are shaping up nice. I think I was too worried about them sliding, as the drum is 8 sided and not round inside. The slab pieces are looking like pretty little stone cow paddys, flat, but rounding edges. Probably very few pieces will end up with the classic tumbled round stone shape, but I think they will be sweet if I manage a good polish on them. I am running the first step about another 5 days to make an even 2 weeks. It seems like a long time, but I want the shapes to be nice. Thanks again, later, Don

Welcome, Don. You'll find a lot of good information here. There is even some on knapping if yo udo a search. With your experience, you can probably help some of our knappers.

So folks don't get confused, note that this post was dug up from June 2003. Donwrob was an active contributor several years ago but I don't think he has posted anything in at least a year.

Hey, I just saw Independance Day, for the first time. I am wondering, could this happen? Would our technology prevent total takeover? If they do not come, is our technology going to take us over? I mean, just the opening scenes. The aliens stayed over major population centers, waiting for our curiosity to draw us in. Then Poof! I be thinking tonite. I was warning about the Electricals, but, I never really considered aliens. Perhaps I was looking in the wrong direction.

Looks like turnedstone answered a post that was started over three years ago and people welcomed this guy aboard without noticing the start date of the thread. This one must have came from 30 pages back. "turnedstone" must have did a search on knapping or something and this thread came up.

even dumber question....how did donwrob...start a new post...with a post from 2003?...not that i care...just being nosey. He didn't start a new post, turnedstone replied to the old thread, which then bumps it to the top of the list. When you are on the main page of the general rocks board, there is on the left side of the screen a little box that says "page" and has a "1" in it, which indicates you are on the first page of threads in the general section (and there are 20 threads on each page). If you click the box, you can go all the way back to page 243, which takes you back to posts years old. Sometimes it's fun to browse the old posts, but if you reply to them they come up to page 1.

Welcome back Donrob, When I read the post I thought I recognized the name and after the others did their investigation I now know where I saw it.
I have a friend from Ohio who is nice enough to send me the scraps from flint knappers there and some of them come out beautiful.I even use the real small flakes for filler in other loads that have to be "beefed up".Some of the prettiest polished rocks I have are flint from Ohio.

donwrob and cookie were my first real pals up here. He sent me the beautiful flint ridge flint in exchange for some of my emeralds to practice faceting. Later I sent him a surprise package of topazes which the postal service apparently trashed in transit so that he only got a fraction of what was sent. I never did get to see the faceted outcome. He had one of those small faceters they were touting back then that I don't hear about anymore, and he liked faceting but it was very slow. I'm still working the flint ridge flint. The pieces were too big to grind effectively in a 3-pounder but they are perfect for the big barrel with some smaller stuff thrown in. Beautiful, beautiful stuff. I miss Don. He's a great guy. And what about Cookster, where the heck are you?
