nansaidh: Beautiful pens. I loved working with wood when I was younger. The last thing I made was a table tennis bat (ping pong paddle) out of a piece of burled walnut. I had to reduce the dimensions and thickness to get the weight to a playable size. Incredibly hard wood with very fast playing characteristics. I made it 35 years ago and still have it. I also made some hanging cabinets out of solid black walnut in HS woodshop about 45 years ago. They were for my parents. I have them now and some day I will use the wood for something interesting. That kind of wood is very expensive and difficult to find now. I love walnut burls. Gotta picture of that paddle? It sounds beautiful. Nancy

Man, oh, man! That is beautiful work, Nancy! Very impressive. And the patterns in the wood are so reminiscent of rock patterns. I just have to ask if you have though about grinding and polishing rock into rolls to use in the pens? I would think it could be done pretty handily. I just watched a How its Done on the Science channel the other night about making pens by gluing different woods together then cutting them in diagonals to make pen parts with patterns so I have some idea of what your process is. I think the thing I like the best is using ancient woods. It is the kind of palio/archeo/creative o stuff that appeals to me on several levels. Can't believe you let them go so cheap!! Thanks for letting us see! Thank you so much! All these compliments have just made my day. I have turned a few of what are called "TruStone" - which is ground up semi-precious stone in resin - they turn beautifully. My "daily writer" is a Lapis Lazuli one: ... and I have a turquoise blank prepped for the next batch of turning (hopefully later this week). Not exactly real stone, but I'm sure it could be done (although the drilling would be precarious in some cases - even some wood gets very hot when drilled (if it's really hard & dense, like African Blackwood, etc.). Of course cooling with water would help immensely. Nancy

Yep, my buddy Ed might have left the lid off the Opticon jar He has been pushing me hard for a cab... I guess I'd better find one soon! Nancy, that lapis TruStone is great looking.... better than the real lapis I've been working. Here is a link with a jig that I think could work for making tubes in rock for your pens. www.lopacki.com/howto/ Scroll down to pic 11 and the pic after and see what you think. Tony

Tony Tony - <brainstorming here> There's no reason at all a jig like that for shaping the pen barrels wouldn't work. My biggest concern would be drilling (brass tubes are inserted into the longitudinal hole in each of the 2 pen blanks to accept the mechanisms) - the smallest hole I drill in my blanks is 7 mm - the largest can be over 1/2". Drilling the TruStone and other acrylics/celluloids usually requires water cooling or the resin overheats and can melt (not pretty) - the drilling of such large holes in real stone would be a very slow process, I would think. Also, the integrity of the pieces of stone would be critical - inner pits, vugs or soft spots could be real problems. BUT - given the right material, lots of patience and a bit of luck, I don't know why it couldn't work. Very cool site!!! Nancy

Hey Tony…....Seeing stoners response, I'm guessing there's more to the Whole Devil glue and little Vac jar, than just zombies and a funky smell huh......... ;D lol.. And No I’m not scared off... Pphft! Puhleez! ..walking dead… They ain't got nuttin on me in da mornings.. lol.. And I’m pretty sure someone who can hold their breath for 3 minutes gives new meaning to the term.. “Iron Lung” … and since mine are like Brass I’m sure 3 minutes would go by EZ! Lol…...It's that whole Buddy thing that gives me the “Uh OH” Feeling . If you know what I mean… Is that In case of the zombies ? Or to make sure they have 911 on hold….. Or is it just for the soul purpose of having a witness that will not only be able to explain to the EMT's, Poison Control and to neighbors and family Why my eyebrows were smoldering green, Or why there was a jar, a rock, and a verry happy zombie that was also stuck to me.. Even still.. That I could understand...But.... Here’s the reason for the “UH OH“ feeling..... I’d go and get a buddy that I think would be there (just in case I need help fighting off the walking dead guys) And instead find out my Buddy just left me unattended , while they were huddled in the corner with the zombies…. Or they would end up convincing me that I got the it all wrong, and then back out as I really start to fug it up…even worse… they would have bad timing and while sparking up a Cig.. They end up nuking us both... So when Help does come.. Instead of the EMT’s the National Guard would show up, along with the Bio Hazard team and of course the 5 Oclock News .. Where you would see me being hauled off to Jail because of all the zombies that are walking around getting stuck to stuff, destroying public property or something.. ….. And my buddy being hauled off in a bubble by the Men in Black … . So you see.. I’m thinking it’s probably safer not only for me and my neighborhood.. But for mankind as well ;D .. Lol But maybe you could save the world and Do another step by step thingy of the whole devil glue process , that way I could eliminate the buddy prob.. And instead of Global disaster…and stuck to a funky smelling Zombie.. I’d only end up getting stuck to the undead, and a rock!.. Lol.. ;D

Roxy... that is too funny!!! Yep, I think it is best you stay away from solvents of any kind. But... if you insist here is the reason for a buddy. I was painting the inside of a gold fish pond for a lady once to make it water tight. I was down in the pond whistling will I worked and my partner heard the whistle go down to a phufftttzzzsssss and saw me starting to take a nap. He pulled me out which was nice as the stuff I was painting had sucked all the air out of the space and explosions were going off behind my eyes. I think the Zombie juice might be the same kind of stuff... so just in case, you need someone watching you Me... well, a lot of folks think I need watching all the time anyway. But I've learned my lesson. I wear a respirator for everything... grocery shopping, sitting on the john, strolling though the neighborhood, swimming When I pass out now there better be a wholesome reason for it! T

LOL.. Tony! now I could see you wearing fhat mask while you were sitting on the john or even strolling through some neighborhoods.. but I dunno if I'd wear it shopping.. someone might think I was DarthVader or something.. and then I'd still end up going to jail again for smacking them upside the head or something.. ;D just teasin...Anger Managment does work! lol ... ;D And Oh Boy do I ever know what ya mean about others who think there is a need to constantly watch other people.. Here I thought it was just me that had the Ghetto Fame and stupid stalkers.. . LOL..... I'm teasin.. ;D .they ain't stalking..... ;D. But anyways.. I'd still like to see a step by step of it.. that way I actually know what you're talking about.. as of now.. only mental picture I get is a rock in a jar with a smiling dead guy hovering over it.. saying "Pass it".. LOL ;D

Hey, Nancy.. I guess drilling a 1/2 hole might be some difficult But at least the rock wouldn't be so heavy. I was thinking alternating areas of wood and stone with the patterns playing off each other. Might have to do inlay instead. Roxy... I'll gear up in my mask and goo suit sometime soon and shoot some pics of the process.. I've just been messing with you It is really pretty straight forward to use and you only need to hold your breath just a little if you have a fan blowing. T
