Was thinking about picking up a used bench grinder at a garage sale or wherever and rigging it up with a couple of cloth wheels for polishing with 50000 and 100000 diamond paste. Should I use tight wheels or loose wheels or will it really matter. I would think the tight wheel would hold the paste better, but thats just my kind of logic talking.

I would use the tight wheels, but leather works a lot better with diamond paste.

I agree on tight wheels for diamond paste, but leather and resin work really great.

And watch the heat. That bench grinder will spin much faster than you would really want and build up heat real fast. T

I tried a soft muslin wheel on a bench grinder and hated it. I also tried a smaller one on a drill press. The drill press works good on slabs and thunder eggs but I can only do one half then rotate the stone to do the second half because the wheel catches on the edge and flips the stone across the room if I try to polish all of it without rotating.
