That is a beautiful cab. The green showing in it is really cool. What makes it so rare? and is it known only as Black Gem or are there other names for it.

Totally new stone for me! I would have pegged it as black jade as much of the stuff from California has magnetite inclusions, is slightly magnetic and is often green when backlit. Now I'm gonna have to dig out my books and read about this neat new gem....Mel

Actually, I pulled out the books and since antigorite is a variety of black serpentine, it is kind of a softer relative of jade and the two are often found in close association in California and Washington for sure. A black variety of jade with magnetite is found near Stoddard Wells by Victorville, CA and is sometimes electroplated as the gold will adhere to the magnetite in the black jade. Most the green color in jade is usually due to the presence of iron but lots of jade has chromium inclusions giving a very bright green,. I even have some in my collection called chromoflec jade which has little flecks of bright green on a gray green base.....Mel

That black cab turned out so nice and with the green surprise, WOW! I would have guessed it to be black jade but I am a novice in this area. I am really learning a lot from this thread as well as having a beautiful cab to look at! Fran
