jerryde -- he can't do that ---- it's going to be @$25,000 for a fishing permit and you have to put them back -- if you're caught eating one it's going to be 15 years in the "tank" ------------- and to smell a "rose" ---------------------------------never see daylight again !! ;D ;D ;D may even have to work for a couple days after you die ,so the congress can have a little more ------------- Cpdad -- we can't all quit smoking because, then, where will the money come from for the 4 million kids health insurance ??(the last person still smoking is going to have one "whopper" of a price on that last pack !

One of those earmarks is actually for the Ministry of Love. Winston Smith went there for a vacation.

I just like a good tussle once in a while...keeps the blood going, all in all we really have good people on this forum... better than beating the wife and kids... I just think we need to put the past behind...learn from it...and get involved if you feel you must for a better future... The old saying..."just vote the guys out" really does not work as it used too...we need people that want to get off the old track of Democrats, Republicans, Independence... We need people not looking for the easy money and (under the table) pay offs. We need people that what they say today will be the same tomorrow.
We have let others decide for us and tell us what is best for our families...I love the old guys that meet at McDonalds every morning at 7am...they have all the world's problems for that day solved by 9am...then each go home and enjoy what they have...

I have not had a smoke for a year and a half now. Doctors orders, not my choice. The wife still smokes, and I went and picked up a pack for her tonight. I was surprised to see they were 5.40 a pack now. Still, I fully agree they need to leave the smoker alone. It is like probitition all over again. Time for another Boston Tea Party. If it is any consolation, I am still quiting everyday for a year and a half. I have to fight the urge to smoke every morning. Coffee is just not the same. If they want something to tax that is killing thousands of people, let them tax people that do not know how to talk on a cell phone and drive at the same time. Next the will be creating auto pilot every time the phone rings because peoples mind switch to dumb mode. Rumor has it, they are going to start taxing Pebble Pickers next.

If you think $5.91 is bad my normal no-brand costs £4.58 ($6.35) for a pack of 20, averaging 60 weeds & up to 600 a day , Branded weeds cost as much as £6.50 ($9.05) a pack!
I had to give up the weeds because of the loony anti-smoking laws in Scotland for 10 days while i was in hospital after Road Traffic Accident last July, it is not just enclosed spaces, but even bus shelters, your own vehicle if used as your work and if parked in your works car park.
In fact there should be No smoking within 30 yards of your work's premise's, though that has been found to be unworkable, i was speaking to service bus driver last week if caught smoking on a bus as a driver it is an instant dismissal (the sack), although using a mobile phone while driving a bus by the police gets you a week suspension without pay, unless you are an owner driver & a £30 ($41.79) fine.
Then there's the litter police after only smokers dropping their fag butts even a few for fag ash instant £50 ($69.66) fine.

;D ;D ;D I must point out to our American cousins that there are a lot more fags up in Scotland, than down here in England. And we don't have our Police chasing around after fag butts. ;D ;D ;D

the thing that gets me the most is the play on words i will not raise tax's on anyone making under 250 thousand -- what he meant to say is i wont tax your paycheck but everything you want to buy will almost double in price -- thats what he should have said but then everyone would have know his true colors before they voted I'm not saying hes the first to say anything to get get elected but dam man he sure is giving us poor folk the shi-ty end of the stick so it seams -- next all your guns will be gone -- its time to start lookin at flea markets and gun shows down here hell ya don't even have to register a gun here right now so even the gun shows only take a receipt to buy one -- i was a dummie i got rid of my throw away piece before i started travelin to be on the safe side so all i have left is a gun that was registered in pa-- so when they come to collect all semi autos that will be gone -- you can bet ill be lookin for some used fire power in the next couple months before that law changes down here maybe a couple older revolvers cause i refuse to be un armed as i still think anything can happen--- i was fishing the bank last year and was having a nice friendly talk with a young woman doin the same and she even had a 38 on her belt and said i never leave home without it she said first two shots are snake shot the rest are hollow points haha -- next thing i gotta look into is doin my own re;oading i have a friend that is doing it so I'm sure he will teach me the right way and what ill need

And we don't have our Police chasing around after fag butts. The litter police is handled by the local district council and not the police force! Stirling is pretty bad both sides of road between the Bus station and Trains station about 200 yards!

Sin taxes do not pay for heath insurance for kids. It pays for Medicaid for Child aka CHIPS.

Richard Wolf, USA TODAY WASHINGTON — Smokers would pay an extra 61 cents per pack of cigarettes to expand health insurance to about 2 million children under a tentative deal worked out Tuesday between Democrats and Republicans on the Senate Finance Committee. The CHIP program has insured about 6.6 million children ineligible for Medicaid. Most are in families with incomes below 200% of the federal poverty level, or $41,300 for a family of four. About 6 million children who are eligible for the program are not covered. John-- it does pay for insurance ---it is for kids that are " ineligible" for Medicaid let's see, --it says a family of 4 making $41,300 ---- well I had a family of 5 and never made $41,300 a year, ever -- shouldn't they be paying me ? ;D ( once again , the poor paying for the "have's"- maybe give me free cigerattes ??) ;D this recent raise in price is only the company portion -- April 1st is when the $.61 raise starts --- so in two weeks they will go up again ------------ I think they ought to put a tax on golf balls & clubs-- they are more dangerous -- alot of people, birds , pets, and buildings get hurt by them :cheesy:

Snowdog, CHIPS is a free or almost free medical plan which Medicaid administers. There can be some minimal buy in charges for parents, but basically it is just another form of welfare with higher income levels and one more move toward national health care. I am all for covering the medical need of children who do not have insurance, but I do not like the public being deceived with a play on words.
Call and ask how to sign up and you will be sent to your local Family Services office or what used to be called the Welfare office.

Ciggy tax? Shoot we ain't seen nothing yet.*sigh* Was just doing some reading about the proposed energy taxes and I had to finally quit because it was all too depressing! I think we're just seeing the tip of the taxation iceberg here. Apparently Obama's proposed energy taxes, which will all ultimately be passed on to all of us, will amount to 100's of billions of dollars. Economist's predictions on the long term effects of this are very dire as energy taxes have a monstrous trickle down effect. Just think, beside the obvious things like way higher gas prices ($4-$8 per gallon a possibility) way higher prices on heating oil etc. everything you buy has to be transported, or uses energy in the manufacturing process. Lots of electricity is oil generated because greens won't allow any more hydroelectric or nuke plants to be built. Crop production (including crop based alternative fuels) uses lots of oil based energy etc. Further predictions have home heating and cooling costs more than doubling, food costs going way up etc. Of course we can all put up solar panels, most of which are built in China or other foreign countries, but retrofitting homes and maintaining panels can be very expensive too and of course, we all have tons of extra cash in our pockets right now! *L*
Of course, some folks will go of grid like Dan who apparently doesn't give a darn the rest of us might be affected as long as his liberal agenda goes forward. The rest of us poor schmucks though, are going to be screwed big time by all these backdoor taxes that Obama says " Gee, are not really taxes!" Tell me. Are any of you other folks fooled by this " No taxes except on the rich!" BS?. We're all, rich and poor, going to be hammered by the trickle down effects of most these new tax proposals. And I know Dan, you think it's all Bush's fault ( congress had nothing to do with it) but do you really think adding all this additional tax and cost burden to a population already financially stressed to the max is really gonna help the country?....Mel

Tax increases was one of the big factors when I quit smoking. I rarely paid more that $2.00 a pack for name brand smokes. I now see people paying $3 to $4 a pack for the lower quality brands and that is before the current and coming tax increases. That's quite a price increase for just over 10 years.
When was the law that approved this tax signed? Did the anti-Christ, evil lord of death, spawn of satin, etc. A.K.A. Obama even sign it?

pebblepup: Shoot, don't Obama sign every tax and pork bill placed in front of him just like ole GW? Seems to me he signs pretty much anything anybody on his side of the aisle asks him to and probably without even reading it, as if he did read it, wouldn't he notice the supersized side orders of pork and taxes?.....Mel

pebblepup --- it was the first part of feb sometime and yes "he" did sign it -- I saw one little article on the news, but if you weren't watching closely you would have missed it -- nothing else was ever said --------
Mel -- you're right --- we haven't seen nothing yet -- just wait for all these too take place and start getting added on ----the "cig" price was just the first that I noticed already at the stores -----------
John-- I don't want any help -- I'll just have a smoke and fade away , if that doesn't cure it ! ;D -- this country is insurance poor -- do you think all the other countries of the world have insurance like we are told to buy ?

snowdog - After doing a little research I found that Obama signed H.R. 2 into law on Feb. 4 the tax is the funding for the expansion of SCHIP as mentioned above.
I also found article confirming that some retailers are already making their customers pay this tax now before the April 1st start date. How legal is that and where will that money go? I think some calls to state attorney generals are in order. Who would you call on the federal side since this is a federal tax? Sadly I bet few if any politicians would do anything about it since supporting smokers is not popular.

pebblepup -- as far as I can tell , they aren't doing anything wrong ---- the raise that you see right now is a "company" raise that "they" have to pay --- April 1st there will be another "retailer" raise of $.61/ pack that "we" will have to pay
