So my 16 inch HP saw is cutting along and I hear the dreaded thump. A rock broke off during sawwing. Well, luckily it wasn't bad at all, infact the chunk of agate that broke free was small and broke free just at the beginning of cutting, right when the blade kissed the rock. There was no blade warpage or nicks. All in all, things seemed normal so I went to cut another rock... but... I put in another rock and started 'er up. It ran fine but the blade appeared not to spin. It was loose. I thought the rock breaking off had loosened the blade so I checked out the nut. It was tight. I removed it, inspected the flanges and nut and everything looked good. I retightened it. The blade was still loose in the flanges. I even added a washer for spacing and retightened everything but the same thing happened. It even wobbled a tiny bit. The flanges seemed small at 3 inches, but those were the same flanges that had been on the saw since I got it and most likely the same ones that had been there for decades before then. This is a HP saw and had been running like a top since I got it 3 years ago. Does anyone know what could be causing the blade to be loose even with the nut tightened down all the way? oil in the flanges? Is my blade bent? My beloved saw sits quietly these days. Please help me get my baby up and running again. Steve

Three inch flange washers would be perfect. The blade needs the washer to be 1/6 the diameter of the blade. The only time I had that happen was when a blade bushing came out of a tile blade. That was obvious because blade went up and down as it slipped. Blade would not tighten until I removed it and peened the bushing in place. Even if blade was damaged it should tighten down. It should not slip when "snug" not overtightened also. If you add a washer between nut and outer flange will it tighten? If threads are not worn it seems like it would tighten.

If everything looks good on the blade side take a look at the pulley,It might have loosened up when the rock broke. It might be that the set screw(s) came loose or the key came out of the slot.Hope you get it going soon.

It may be, I learned the hard way, that you tightened the nut too hard and broke out the center of the blade

Hmmm. I'd think adding a washer would be a bad thing as the flanges are supposed to be only snug and applying pressure evenly to the blade. You don't mention whether the arbor shaft is spinning but not the blade not which would indicate the center of the blade is broken. I'd totally dismount the blade and look it over more carefully. No way the arbor should spin while the blade does not if it's mounted correctly and the blades OK. If the motor's running but the arbor is not spinning, then you have a belt or pulley problem....Mel

Weird problem... you might check if the thread on the shaft is still good, either way you turn the nut in vane. But you should had felt it, it would turn endless.
Anyway, check if you can spin the blade by hand while the shaft is standing.

Mel, I meant a washer on nut side to tighten on a thread farther out in case thread was worn/damaged. Definitely check arbor turning but not blade. HP is belt driven so not turning can be as simple as belt slipping, pulley loose, etc.

Take the blade off and remove the label.
