Well, that shoots down my theory... I am shocked that Obama would take the risk of losing face by going over there with several jets and a huge carbon footprint if it was not a sure thing.

It's Rio. Will be interested to see how they do as they planning on having many visitors staying on boats. They don't have the hotel infrastructure.

Glad Chicago didn't get it. That would have just cost us tax payers a bunch more greenbacks.

Speaking of carbon footprints, I just read a post on how much Obama's date nights cost the taxpayers and he should be ashamed of his criticisms of big corporate execs because he's way worse than they are. If you figure all his secret service guys, marines, choppers, Lear jets. paying for hotels and per dium for his protective services etc, his freaking dates cost us hundreds of thousands per date. be cheaper for us if he preferred thousand dollar a pop DC hookers....Mel

Glad Chicago didn't get it. That would have just cost us tax payers a bunch more greenbacks. From the other thread, looks like tax dollars wouldn't be involved. That was one of the disadvantages of Chicago - they don't have the government backing most countries provide. Mostly private dollars: I was wrong - looks like tax dollars will not be involved in Chicago's bid (at least not federal tax dollars): This is a sticky problem for any U.S. city that bids for a Games. IOC rules require each bid to guarantee financial solvency -- in effect, to provide a guarantor to cover any potential shortfall. Most cities simply have a government branch (city, regional or national) sign off on the guarantee. U.S. cities can't rely on the national government to be a safety net. (The U.S. is the only country that relies entirely on private money to fund its Olympic teams.) The Chicago committee's $3.8 billion budget includes a $450 million contingency charge and it secured $1.45 billion in private insurance policies to enable the city to sign the IOC's financial guarantee contract. The city still needs to construct a main stadium, a velodrome and an aquatics center. The cost of building a 38-acre Olympic village on the site of a closed hospital will run another billion, but it is technically outside the Olympic budget.

All the politics aside, I'm a little bummed Chicago lost out. I thought this would be a once in a lifetime trip to take my family on, as I'm just over 3 hrs from the windy city. My daughters would be in their late teens, and some great memories would have been made. My parents took my brother and I to the World's Fair in 1984 in Chattanooga TN, and I still have great memories of the fair... Oh well, maybe in 2020 LOL! Nate

I'm disappointed too. My in-laws live 45 minutes west of the city. Might have been crazy to live in, but would have been fun to visit.

During the 1996 Olympics, there was so much made of how crowded Atlanta would be that most of the locals within an hours drive did not go to the games. The city of Atlanta had shutle buses as far out as 40 miles on the west side of Atlanta to bus folks into the city venues. Most of the buses were just parked with at lots with motors running, a real waste. I worked over in Atlanta at the time and drove 45 miles into Atlanta each day then. Most folks that came to the games were out of towners or foriegn. I don't know, I don't really think it was good for people to attend, but the businesses sure made lots of money.
