Well, this is what was sold to me as Lizardstone: The patttern is much better, but I suppose it could be the same material. My piece is hard as a rock <grin> and I would call it jasper and not silicified rhyolite. Form the cut face I can tell it will polish well. The saw almost polished it. Possibly this listing is a different rock by the same name, or possibly it has less silica than what I got. Or maybe someone has cut/broken just the light green band off of rough like mine.

Nope, that looks like the picture of the stuff I bought - hasn't arrived yet. The auction I listed in my posting looked similar enough, so I posted that. The seller claims it will take a good polish too, but haven't heard back on what she thinks it is yet. But at less than a buck a pound including shipping I figured why not?
Sure gets confusing when you see the same names possibly associated with different rock.

Not to confuse anyone, but maybe to help, Lizardite is in the Serpentine family and is soft (Mohs 4) and does not get a great polish, but a satin finish. Definitely not what you have here.

If the banding was linear and uniform, I would guess flow banded rhyolite. There is a lot of green rhyolite along the east coast of the Appalachians.
But given the wood grained appearance, it looks like agate/jasper replaced wood.

I can't see what you bought, what Daniel has is lizardstone, I cabbed a slab that I got from Maryann, and it cabbed beautifully, I used tin oxide for the final polish, and it is a beauty. I am not so fond of green but this was an exception, I even kept the cab. Amber

Excellent - not that I wasn't a little late asking the question...
