I mentioned my favorite magazine The Week in another thread. Here are a couple examples of articles they have in there: www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/10/15/AR2009101503477.htmlThis one blames bad grades in school on absent fathers rather than race. This is one article I don't agree with - even though absent fathers might make life harder over all; I think this is more a case of self-fulfilling prophecy. These kids have heard over and over that they can't do well because their dad isn't around, so they don't do well. FYI - the articles in the week are extremely compressed, but get the idea across. www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2009/oct/18/barbara-ellen-starting-schoolThis one really cracks me up. How'd you like to have this lady for a mother. We love our kids, as long as we don't have to be around them.

There are alot of reasons for bad grades. I had bad grades for two reasons. First, I grew up with my grandparents who never made it past grade 6, so they never expected me to do well either. I could have quit after grade 8 and they would have expected it. The second reason was that I was bullied constantly. Even with all that, I did graduate grade 12.

Case in point - it's a matter of wanting to. Various things can contribute, but they can all be overcome instead of using a non-ideal situation as an excuse.
