I have lost hope. In the US we vote for stink then get tired of it and vote for stench then get tired of that and vote for stink again. Same old sh*t different nostril.

I wonder though if it is the smell that is so bad, or the problem that our popular thought and analysis and commitment is so shallow. Can we expect political process to reflect anything sensible when we have allowed it to degenerate into spin and soundbites - no matter what is true, just say it loud, often, and focus on the most freakish aspects. Sort fo like the unexplainable popularity of reality TV.

I'll vote for anything that is not Obama, Pelosi, Reid, etc. If they put a cross-eyed, one-eared jackass up against Obama, I'll vote for him, her, it. Curt

Until he the system is fundamentally changed, that is the best we can do. Vote for whoever we think will hurt us least - then vote for someone else the next time. Lather, rinse, repeat...

Yes, but how does fundamental change happen? Or, more specifically, how can folks be part of the solution and not the problem, or just in the disaffected section?
How can we limit manipulative advertising? How can we stifle the spread of myths and spin, without limiting free speech?
From the other side, how can we encourage folks to think for themselves ... to do a little research ... to actually listen to the other side before saying they disagree - and then to say why, instead of just hurling an insult.
This is the part where I lose hope.

Obama campaigned for the Dems in Virgina and New Jersey... They lost. He did not campaign in New York, and the Democrat there won. Go figure....

Curt Wow Curt, I didn't realize you were running. Well, seriously, I generally count it as a personal failure when I stoop to name calling; but I'm trying out that thing you said, "comic relief". Maybe if I can view you as a silly caricature instead of a total hate-filled idiot who unfortunately has the right to vote. I can't know you, know your life, know if you are hate-filled - but this is honestly how you sound and what I fear. Other folks on here who want to argue the conservative side of politics manage to be civil (as opposed to like when you called me a joke) and even rational, giving arguments and counterarguments with some semblance of logic. Todd and Mel and others have articulated positions that I might think are shortsighted, or have a logical flaw - but they do so with civility, and can generally explain their reasoning. As a left-of-center independent, who is not afraid of the death penalty, and would like to see greater personality accountability, and smaller government, I know there are folks much more to the left than me, but I can tell them why I think they are wrong - not just call them names. Part of me knows people like Curt will just dismiss me, or insult me, but I honestly hope that if I take a stand and point out just how blind and hateful he sounds, some folks will realize how true it is. I think Curt should go see a therapist and figure out where his hatred is coming from. It is one thing to be at the other end of the spectrum on one or more issues. ... to be more ruged individual than socialist, to be more conservative than liberal; it is another thing to suggest people you disagree with are therefore some sort of total criminal asshole evildoer. I think all politicians lie. Seems to me that those running on the right have to say things about education or religion or evolution or spending that might be more extreme than they actually believe. At least that is the only way I can figure when an educated otherwise intelligent person stakes out a stupid position in the public sphere. I think folks running on the left have often supported entitlements or spending that does not make sense. They all do it to curry votes. I thought Bush was deceptive, and Cheney worse, but I would not say "I'll take anybody over them" - because I could imaging many worse. History has seen Adolf Hitler and Radovan Karadzic and such ilk, who were so evil and beholden to their base, that genocide followed. American politics has seen the likes of McCarthy, or David Duke, so I know there are plenty worse than the likes of recent leaders I disagreed with. So why are Obama and Pelosi the absolute worst Curt can imagine? Is it his lack of imagination, or is he really so fearful and contemptuous? I don't think it is anything as simple as anti-feminism, or anti-black. But there has to be some reason for the irrational over-the-top vitriol. I think it is fear. I think when someone you disagree with is actually articulate, has some credentials, and has a few points, then it is a more threatening situation - because you can't just dismiss them, or be comfortable in your complete rejection of them. I'm not puzzled that folks disagree with Obama and Pelosi, but I am puzzled when they get their shorts in such a wad that they lose their words, and their wits, and their manners. What's driving all that? I honestly wonder.

This is the part where I lose hope. I think the only way to bring about fundmantal change is to water the tree of Liberty... (I'm sure you're familiar with the quote). But to be honest, despite all the moaning and groaning about democrat this and republican that - most of us (myself included) are too comfortable to contemplate it. We'll live with it and continue our bitching. You're dead-on - don't limit free speech no matter how many lies are spread. People have to think for themselves and be able to dessiminate when someone is lying to them - and when they're spouting promises there is no way they can keep. I also agree with you on the research. I don't like Obama for things he has done and for things he wants to do. But I don't believe all the lies I read about him either. My father-in-law sends me some real doozies. Common sense should tell him there is no way it can be true, but some folks get blinded for their own side and will believe anything that talks bad about the other team. So I just laugh and direct him to Snopes. There is plenty not to like about Obama for real - we don't need to add in trumped up charges.

You don't want to have to come back as deb193reduxredux. I don't back off and I don't run. You are right, I am afraid and that fear drives me. I'm afraid that Obama is going to do what he said he would and "Fundamentally change America". It scares the living daylights out of me. The rest of what you said about me is feeble insults that I won't give you my time to reply to. What you think about me is totally irrelevant and of no consequence whatsoever. Curt
