The latest installment of the 'Harris' estate sale was this weekend. (Santa Paula, CA) Though this is the fifth month this has been happening (1st Saturday of each month) and the mounds are steadily shrinking, there is still much here - and surprises are still being uncovered in the yard. Today was no exception. Here's a picture of the yard. In August, it was a wilderness of metal and overgrown bamboo and weeds. The constant work of rockhounds and the work of Mr. Harris's son has cleared much of it away. Where the people are standing in the photo was unreachable until recently, and the back wall was almost completely obscured. Looking across from the left side of the yard to the right wall. General pile. You can see obsidian, wood, and glass slag jumbled together in this image. Unknown to me, the most incredible material to be found today was two feet to my left under two feet of rocks. For the first time, people began attacking the central mass of rock. At the bottom was found several stumps of Arizona petrified wood. It wasn't the find of the day, but the clearing of rock need to remove these pieces uncovered the prize(s). (Posting #2 will include the closeup photos of the dino bone found in August here.) (Posting #3 will include a few pieces I picked up today, a few mysteries I need solved, and teh surprise find of the day.)

Thanks again for sharing the sale with us stuck in limestone land Lowell! Was the gentleman that collected all this rock a lapidary also, or did he just collect the rocks, throw them on the pile, and collect more?

Nate,
He has some stuff in the house that is polished, and we are finding a bunch of cut material, but there just isn't a lot of finished product around.
We don't know if he gave it away or sold it before he passed, but with this amount of material, and the amount of evidence that he worked his collection, there just isn't the finished product here that we would expect.
We keep digging though, and wonder if he stashed it in the attic of the house... I hate to think what us rockhounds would do to a house to find the hidden jackpot.
I'm glad you've enjoyed the post.

Oh, to be there wandering through that beautiful rock heaven! I would love to be able to do that! Some of those rocks are monsters! I am surprised Maryann hasn't seen these to drool over! Fran
