I havnt seen anything posted about fire obsidian. Is there another name for it? Saw a 5 gal bucket of it,but the 6.50 a lb price made me wait to find out more about it. Any help appreciated, the material was dirty and not windowed enough to tell anything about the inside. Thanks

I think fire obsidian is another name for rainbow obsidian. I am not sure but I seem to recall that it just has more gold and red reflection in it or something. Maybe one of our Obsidian experts will pipe up about it. Fran

I'm not an obsidian expert but I think fire obsidian is different than rainbow. I think the refraction of samples I've seen is much more like that of true fire opal and is very intense and flashy compared to to rainbow. If you google fire obsidian you can see some cool pics....Mel

Fire obsidian for 6.50/pound? I would buy it all, if it is fire and not rainbow. Fire obsidian that I heard of is supposed to have a very thin layer of fire that has to be worked correctly to get it to work out. It usually is worth alot more that $6.50/pound.

I'd be quite skeptical of an offer like that, true Fire Obsidian usually sells for several dollars per carat, topgems.homestead.com/fire_obsidian.html"Nadine" at "Dry Fire" is about the only seller of the "good stuff" that I know of, and her web page doesn't list any for sale right now, although they might have some at the shows in Az this next month or so. If there is any "fire" in the $6.50/lb stuff, it will be only very small amounts, and probably no way to even see it in the rough.

Fire obsidian is only found at Glass Buttes Oregon, and usually sells for $5.00 per carot...that makes a 4 X 4 slab come out to about $2500.00. Nadine of Dryfire should be out of fire obsidian since the BLM has come down on she and her husband for moving their claim markers to encompass the fire obsidian site at Glass Buttes. They do not have a claim of fire obsidian although they do have grandfathered obsidian claims at Glass Buttes.
Fire obsidian will flash like you have never seen before, whilst rainbow, will be, well rainbow, but still pretty.
So, if that bucket has fire in it, buy it, all of it..........if it is rainbow, that price is a bit high, but now bad. BTW, the fire layer is usually only one single fine layer, and is hard to see, especially in daylight...house lighting is better. When working it, work carefully, since if you do cut into the fire...it is gone forever. If the material in in small pieces, tumble it to get the best window of where the fire layer is. Woody

Echo ALL of the comments above concerning BUY IT ALLLLL ! I picked up a couple strips of it that measure 1 1/2 X 4 in. with the fire band running from end to end. I have visions of making a point out of one piece and saving the other for display. I believe the point will wait until I get REEEEALLY GOOOOD at pressure flaking tho ! A piece of that with GOOD fire will almost make an Opal look TACKY !
