Two weeks ago, that estate sale in Santa Paula was open again and I went browsing through the sadly diminished piles. Still, there was much left and a few surprises left in store, but the wonderful chaos and sense of undiscovered treasure was much more subdued.
So here's a few pics of some of the items picked up:
Geodes from Zacatecas (two buckets)
and what I believe might be Dugway, but the rind doesn't quite match my other specimens. The interior, though, is fairy tale glittery. Got two buckets of these and there's still more there:
A few interesting pieces of palm:
A couple chunks of jasper:
A yucky green stone:
A few interesting red pieces that someone said were from Utah and may be pigeon blood. I've never seen this material, but was wondering if anyone out there might verify or disprove that ID.
And got a bucket of these odd nodules (again probably from Utah) that were ID'd as either agate nodules or coprolites. Got 2/3 of a bucket of them. (Don't know what they are, except that they are pretty!) Anyone verify the ID?
Finally - while waiting for our club's workroom to open last week, one of the members came by and said he was cleaning out his garage of some items, and that we were free to pick what we wanted from the boxes. There was AZ wood, mineral specimens, howlite, crazy lace - just a jumble of cool stuff without any rhyme or reason. I picked out a shoebox full. One was this piece of Paul Bunyan Agate
And then there was this jar of green. He said variscite, but it didn't look right. I'm wondering if it's chrysoprase. I need to test it. In either case, the price was right.
Thank you for looking...

(You may not care, but I hate misinformation - especially my own.) For clarity and honesty's sake I'm posting this picture - Initially I stated I had 1 bucket of the strange Utah material, and then said 2/3's of a bucket - so here is the picture of the current bucket of utah material minus four pieces that I've taken out to cut. (I first had put the nodules in a mop bucket at the sale before transferring to a 5 gallon at home...) It's late. I'm tired. I'm annoyed at the Earhart posting vanishing trick that occurred earlier. I don't want to look like a liar. The photo and it's bedtime:

Man looks like you cleaned house! The pauk bunyan agate is too cool lookin! To me your unknown "looks like agate nodules" do look just that, like a moss agate of some kind, but I may be way off base, and know not what I am talking about. Great stuff tho!! Marie

You sure found some pretty rocks that were over looked by others. Thanks for persevering and getting the pics up.

You sure cleaned up there! I suspect that could be pigeon blood. The stuff I have are much lighter with some red dots but if that is old stock, it could have been much more colorful than the stuff found today. I will wait for Mel or Catmandew (Tony is the person that sent me some) to chime in on that one. What ever the greens are, I love them! Fran

Dang Lowell, now you've got me jealous! What a score! That Paul Bunyan is a real eye popper! As far as your ID's go, that second nodule looks like a Dugway to me. The big orange and red jasper/agate following the palm, looks like Pata de Gallo ( roostertail agate) to me but similar stuff comes from a lot of areas in the pacific northwest and Texas. Can't tell if the first green piece has sparkles or not ( green aventurine) but if it's more like agate it may be mtoroite which is a green agate from Africa. The lighter green at the end looks like Aussie chrysoprase to me. The bucket of nodules is Utah stuff from the San Rafael Reef area. Some folks say it's coprolite. I've also heard it called Green River Agate, San Rafael Agate, Grape Agate ( from the botryoidal exterior on some of the nodules) etc.. That red one does look like good Pigeon Blood Agate. All in all you really scored some fine looking material.....again! *L*.....Mel

Excellent score! That Paul Bunyan slice is exceptional! The Pigeon's Blood looks very promising.

Nice haul! I'm green with envy. At least it's good to know someone who appreciates the rocks has them. I never seem to be in the right place at the right time to pick up treasures like those from sales ahhh, maybe some day.
