Not posting this for the reason you may think: www.cnn.com/2010/US/01/28/kaye.wine.train/index.html?hpt=C1Stimulus, pork, Dems, and Repubs aside... This project is meant to stop frequent flooding in Napa. Didn't they do that experiment before? I'm thinking of damming the Nile to avoid the annual floods. Protect property and lives - only they didn't find out until it was done that the annual flooding brought needed nutrients to their crops. Think they lost a lot of farmland that way. I'm sure it has happened in other places as well. So could this be the end of Napa Valley? Or maybe they'll have to start trucking in fertilizer by the tanker-load. Or maybe the situation is completely different... Just thinking out loud. Any thoughts?

i love this post
Guest-- Here again we have the Republicans (and especially John McCain) not getting their facts straight - when is this B.S. going to stop!
id say look at your prez and tell him to stop-- he does the same thing every time he opens his mouth haha
as for the money being used to relocate the train tracks -- i don't know if I'm for or against it -- maybe they could just cut out the tracks in the way and just load people at a diff place so they wont have to waste money on moving it -- maybe thats not an option i don't know

Hmmm. Maybe. Being from California and involved in both marine and freshwater biology, I'm pretty familiar with projects overseen by the Core of Engineers and they kinda have a reputation as being wasteful screwups. Many of their projects don't work all that well and are grossly expensive. Also, from the article, it does look like a major amount of money is being spent to protect the station and tracks of a rich folks entertainment system as that's mainly who goes on those expensive wine tours etc. To my thinking, why should the taxpayers have to pay for this kind of stuff that mainly the rich use. Let the train system pay for protecting their station and their tracks. Just my viewpoint as I don't drink and this sort of thing holds no interest for me. But heck, does everything have to be on the taxpayers dime?......Mel

Yep, Sands - the Repubs definitely pulled a boner on #11.
I don't know, Mel. Whether the business caters to rich or whoever, an expense like that could sink the business. I don't know how 'rich' the owners are.
But my original post was based more on long term effects to the Napa Valley environmet/fertility. What are the long term ecological effects on preventing the flooding - to both the wine industry and the environment as a whole?

Toad, Again the Core of Engineers is famed for screwing up the environment rather than helping it out. Far as the flooding is concerned, since California tends to be an alternating flood and drought type environment, if you live near water, you should expect to be flooded once and awhile. The Core's solution, no matter what they claim, is to flood control the whole state and damn the environment. Flooding of course, helps fertility and lowlands are great for wildlife. Concreting or rip rapping in every creek and river helps folks dumb enough to live on a flood plain, that's all....Mel

You're right, Chas. I sure missed the obvious, didn't I.
I wonder why the environmentalists aren't screaming over the one in Napa - at least not that I've heard.
