Colorado and Wyoming (see other thread) are the next two states I'll be requesting images for. `Both have well-known agate deposits but do not have as many as either the Pacific states or the Southern Border states (which will be coming later. `After these two states, I will be moving up into Montana and Idaho.
We are now requesting images of material from the great state of Colorado for this thread. The images can be of rough, polished specimens, cabs, or tumbled stones. If you have any that you're willing to share, please post with a brief note on the region and its common name (if it has one.) Credit for the photo will be assigned to your name or online title (or not at all if that's your choice.)
Any material that fits under the heading agate/jasper is welcome to be posted here, even if it is from lesser known locations.
Current Material on Post: from Mel dino bone coprolite Creed - Sowbelly agate agatized coral
A sample of some of the better known agates/locations we're hoping to have provided are: Wolf Creek Pass Geodes/Nodules Sowbelly Agate (would like a good purple shot) Del Norte Thundereggs Trinidad green jasper Fairplay - blue agate Royal Gorge/Red Canons region "Garden Park?" - banded agate, geodes but it doesn't have to be from these places. There are many places I've not mentioned that would be readily known to people outside the state. We'd love to see sample of these. If in doubt, POST!

Lowell, Brother, Colorado is a tough nut to crack. You really need a local collector. Here's where dino bone and coprolite become a problem because unless you get it from the guy who hunted it up and he tells you where he got it, almost all bone or coprolite could be from Colorado or Utah. I got some bone the guy said came from his ranch in Colorado but to my eye, it can't really be distinguished from the Utah stuff. I have only a couple of Colorado specimens and I'll have to take some new pics.....Mel

Mel,
I put it in because I didn't expect much material (to keep it simple at the beginning), but I realized I wanted to slowly do a tour of the middle to upper states before tackling the south and west. I also figured that I should have enough room in the first file I create to encompass these 1st 5 states I've mentioned, and I wanted them grouped fairly close together, hence Colorado. The main items I expected/hoped to see are the Del Norte, as it's been getting more play lately (article in Rock and Gem/inclusion in recent Fine Agate Calendar), Sowbelly Agate, as it's been around a while, and some of the Wolf Creek material. Everything else is going to be a bonus at this point. Dino bone I'm thinking deserves its own subset for the reasons you mention. It should be included, but I think maybe its own heading would work best. It allows for ID of this material without the exactness of location, when that is in doubt. I agree that the local collectors are going to have to be called upon for this project. But I'm thinking we, as visitors to Gem/Mineral Shows have cameras in our hands - so for those interested in helping in this project - I need to find out the policy/legality of photographing other people's material and then displaying the image. Do we, as the public, have the right to distribute images of other people's rocks that we photograph in public, like a show? Or is that somehow 'owned' by the rock owner? Thanks,
Lowell

Lowell, I think I only have some dino bone, coral, and sowbelly from the state. There are lots of good wood locations but again, most wood looks a lot alike. One special wood they have is fern which is quite unique. Another ole timey location is Curio Hill near Canon City. Aside from the Del Norte eggs though, I hardly ever see Colorado material except Sowbelly and bone....Mel

Here are a few more Lowell. This is the bone and the coprolite I got from guys who, for what it's worth, claimed Colorado as the origin. Dinosaur bone from extreme NW corner of Colorado near Elk Springs. Not as colorful, maybe, as the stuff I have supposedly from Utah. Coprolite; Location Colorado. Probably from the same part of the state. Very sorry about these pics. My camera hates light purple. These are Sowbelly Agate from Sowbelly Canyon, Mesa Co. Colorado. Not far from Creede. Base color is light lavender-purple but I have no idea how to color correct pics. If you do feel free to alter them.

Got this specimen from a guy at Quartzite and have never brought myself to cut it. Agatized and very colorful Coral ( probably Favosites sp.) stated to be from extreme NW corner of Colorado. I'm not sure I can square the age of this material with the age of the formations in that area but perhaps I've misidentified the genera.
