After 26 years I am finally changing jobs. You would think that after that long a period it would be a tough choice to do but it really wasn't. The plan for the last few years had been for my boss to retire and sell me the business once I became a licensed engineer. In a good economy this would be tough for me to do but it this economy it would be impossible. My new job pays significantly more and has real benefits, I've never had eye or dental and haven't had a retirement plan for over 10 years. I'm pretty excited about the new opportunity and am looking forward to spending my next 26 years there. They also have offices in Phoenix so when Amber and I are ready to move out to AZ in 10 years I'll have a good chance of transferring. It will be interesting entering the corporate world though.

Tony,
I wish you all the best with your new job. The hardest part is getting used to the new "needs" placed on you and figuring out just what everyone says they need and what they really mean. It is exciting and challenging all at once and you will do great at it! Just get passed the initial few months and you will settle and feel you have never been anywhere else! The benefits are a mighty good thing too! Congratulations!!! Fran

Thanks all. I dropped the bomb on my boss today and he took it pretty well. He said he wasn't surprised and I believe him. Now he has to decide if he is going to close the doors and work out of his house or hire someone else. He's 73 but not ready to retire. I feel sorry for him because his business was his baby and a source of pride for him.

Tony, that is great and good for you. It isn't easy making that kind of decision even when it is the best move to make. But really, I think, nope, I know that your new employer is getting the better deal bringing you in.
Those benies alone are worth it and I am really happy for you so have fun with this new phase of your life.
