The last 2 years a dollar store here in town has had these eggs for sale.I was playing around and decided to slab one. the egg weighs a little over 1/2 lb. the slabs come off perfectly round and beveled.I guess these are onyx? These are examples of the different items they had for a dollar.I gave away half of them to my kids, this is what I had left. I've been watching for a new shipment, but that may be it. Also, the dollar store became the $1.09 store now.lol These items have minor imperfections in most cases.Ipicked through hundreds of them to get these, thats why they were there I guess. snuffy

Cheating my arse! That's a cool idea. If the price is right, go for it.

The best thing I ever found at our dollar store was a 64-count box of crayolas. Nice find.

Great idea. That's calcite onyx/travertine which is a popular product form Mexico and other countries. Chopping up carvings, eggs etc is becoming a popular way to score some cutting materials nowdays as lots of countries now prohibit exportation of rough. Only art items can be exported. I seem to remember Ron of Rons Rocks slabbing up worked hunks of African Queen Picture jasper as a way to get good slabs and I've seen the same thing with Zaire malachite and Ocean jasper. I have huge polished bullseye filled display piece of Zaire malachite on my bookshelf right now that I've been eyeballing *L*....Mel

My SO buys stone eggs and spheres all the time at rock and gem shows if the price is right so we can cut them up and polish them. Some turn into round cabs good enough for wire wrap with just a little time in the rotary then finish them in the vibes...

I've done a similar trick with polishing cuts taken from drill cores found at old mining sites. The material is not as select, but it is a good head start on a perfect circle, or oval if you cut them on an oblique angle.
