Any interest in POI files for your GPS? I'm thinking of creating lists of collecting sites, convert them to lat/long and create POI files for them. If you have any interest in this let me know and I'll get started. Also, if you have a specific brand/model of GPS that requires a special type of file you'll have to let me know. Most of them can take either a gpx or csv file. I create them in csv and then can convert them to just about any format needed. I'll start an on-line library for them if you are truly interested. For me, I like to select the POI for a location and let the GPS figure out the drive route for me.
Anyway, if you're interested, especially in any specific state or region, please let me know. If you have a listing of these sites, please share! Would make this easier if I can receive lists of places people have already been so I can start the database up.
Just thought I'd offer...since I"m a geek and going to do this anyway...lol

Yes, indeed! I am also interested. I have a Garmin Nuvi, it can use csv files, I also have converter software that can change it. Wish I had locations of places here in GA. If I discover any, I will pass along the info.

Oh I have quite a few places around the country, going to keep this as much North America as possible, not personally going to any other country rock hounding. Anyway, I'll start putting this together by state and before the big conversion to CSV will post the locale's here so that everyone can get a gander at it. I mapped the lake I live on like this, every shoal, shallow, channel marker, island, etc. Great for night navigation.
For this, would be fun to have it handy when I'm out on business trips, carry my rock gear with me everywhere anyway, along with my metal detector and camera gear, so might as well use it!

Has anyone created a POI GPX, CSV file for Rockhounding yet? If anyone has one available, I would love to include it in my Garmin Oregon 450T.
I've included my email to assist.
Thanks in advance.

I have a Garmin Nuvi too. It sure would be nice to find locations with here in South Carolina and Tennessee using it. The exact pin point locations would definitely help me out.

That sounds like a great idea. My daughter goes geocaching. I always wished there were geocaches that you could search by theme, like "rock hounding".

We too enjoy GeoCaching as well, hence the Oregon 450T.
I have POI'ed my locations that I have visited. Nice scenic locations, but I have yet to find anything worth writing home about! Well, I did find one nice blob of Jade on the beaches of Camano State Park in WA.
I know it would be real easy to sew a bunch of POI's together and join them into one large file. I do believe most unit's limitations are 1,000 POI's though, so I guess it would be best to have them by Prov / ST. Of course some States, like MT may have to zoned off (NW, SW, Central, NE, SE).
Maybe it might be most intelligent to start a new thread just for your favorite POI's.
Food for thought for all to share in on!
