I didn't see the puddingstone post so I don't have any context for the question. Where did you collect your specimen, and how hard is it? From the photo, I'm not so sure that it's quartz but photos can be very deceiving.
If it's in fact quartz, you shouldn't have any trouble isolating some fracture-free areas and getting some nice cabs with excellent polish on them. I've been out of cabbing for awhile but I never recall quartz giving me a hard time.
