Anybody here have a flat lap and have any experience getting scratches out on a flat surface? Do you basically just have to grind until it seems forever?
This is for starters on the 180 disc.

I'm new to flat laps, but everyone I have asked the quetsion to says that I need to add a #80, #90, or #100 diamond mesh disk for the first stage. The #180 is a little too fine for getting saw marks out. It will work, but it will be slow.

Thanks Darryl, I kind of figured that it was more of a patience, and time factor.

I was just at the rock club and I was reading some magazines. There was a tutorial for a crysocolla pendant and to flatten the back of the stone, it said to use the 180 lap and that it would take approx. 20 mins.!
After reading that, I have slowed down on my lap and i make sure that I have a totally flat surface coming off my 100 grit. I noticed if I rushed that the back was not completely flat. I used to work in seconds but now I work in minutes and I have much better results.

Yeah, it takes a bit to get them done. It's sure a lot harder than you'd think it would be. I like to try to rotate the piece as I'm grinding so it will work in all directions on the stone, and hopefully not grind in one area too much. Here's also where drying the cab and using magnification to look for scratches between steps really pays off.

LOL!! I don't need no stinking magnification or dry the cab to see the scratches I'm talkin about. I think I need me an 80 or 100 disc.
