Tandi
" What type is it , what is the red . I have what i think is a meteor , could you identify from just a picture ? "
type / Nickle-iron. The red is fusion crust from impact, the temp of impact was close to 3000 -f degrees, melting the sand and crushed material around the cater zone. as told the meteorite was found in Eastern Oregon. in the 40s.
conical shape and the wrinkles on the melted surface is the way to tell it from other material in the iron group, the crust from impact.
strike plate test is good to, Most other earth material well have oxides on surface from 02.
And a patina coat of hydration.

Interesting Stone! - Has a different texture of many meteorites - if I were you I'd take it to Portland State University and have it ID'd by the Cascadia Meteorite Lab. These guys are great - The reason I suggest this is there is only 6 confirmed Meteorites found in Oregon and two of them were just placed on the list in 2010. Some Links for folks - Cascadia Lab - meteorites.pdx.edu/Info on Oregon Meteorites found - meteorites.pdx.edu/northwest.htmGood Luck and Great find! ;D
