This is such a lousy picture But this is some petrified something or other I’m pretty sure its not wood I think its cactus. The outer part was ribbed The rock is approximately 6” high and same diameter about7lbs. It was slabbed by some one and the material is gorgeous. The neighbor who owns it - offered me a slab-- if I can get it cut. Beef? Interested? Anyone have any ideas how to I.D. particular types of petrified? Thanks Ed

If you say it`s not wood . I can see the picture just good enough to say sponge . if you can get a closer picture , hold the camera four inches from the rock and try that . Where do you think it is from ?

Ed, try a pic in the shade too. This AZ sun can wash out a pic real good. Can you change your pic size to large in Photobucket? (Gonna really test your photo skills now Ed, LOL) Jo

Looks alot like Eden Valley Pet Wood- Color and pattern look the same as some Eden Valley I've had kicking around for a few years.

From what I can tell from the pic, I think Stefan is right. Eden Valley wood.

I'll have to do some research on Eden Valley ect... I would think the rock is from the Arizona area I'll ask the neighbor if they know any history of it
does cactus petrify?

Yeah, I'm sure many pet wood specimens have a common appearence and can be pretty indistinguishable from specimens from a different area....short of knowing the history of the piece, it may be next to impossible to make a positive ID....
nice piece anyway, lots of interesting colors and patterns....

Some more pictures The person thinks they found it in a bank parking lot not far from the neighborhood. Well no rocks escape this kid. So no known history I’m starting to doubt that its is petrified I thought it was ribbed more prominently Short of spectrograph test or obvious features such as tree rings or a critter shape how does one determine a petrified from a metamorphic mineral formation ? Thanks !! Ed I reduced the size of the pictures so they would upload faster on my slow machine perhaps, a person can enlarge them on their photo editor if that would help
