Here is the challenge and the prize. I figure it is a $10+ slab of fracture free Owyhee Picture Jasper. The area pictured is about 13cm x 13cm as I measure it. The image is 600x600 pixel, so about 46 pixel/cm. (thumbnail) The challenge was to use this slab most effectively. Use your favorite graphics program to cut cab blanks from this slab. Assume you have a band saw and can cut pretty much without waste. But keep your sizes realistic. (No amazing images that turn out to be only 3mm high.) But also, try to get the most spectacular blanks, while trying to get as much use of the stone as you can. In other words balance the two goals. Using every bit of the slab may bring down the overall quality of you set. Going only for one large spectacular blank will lower your efficiency. The winner will get the slab, and hopefully will proceed to make good on their proposal and come back to show us the finished work.

Ok lets turn out the vote. If you vote and post some of the points you considered in deciding (you don't have to say who/what you actually decided), I will send each poster who wants a small slabett of Hidden Valley Picture Jasper. You can tumble it as is, grind a shape and tumble finish, or make a small cab. (clickable thumbnail)If you want the Picture Jasper, just PM me with you address after you post to this thread. -Daniel

Like stoners cause I would have chosen some of his designs as well. Zotika's look the best (maybe its the black lines making it look very clean but like his cab selection as well as his shape selection. akansan has the best overall cab selection (IMO) for showing nice pictures.
Good job by all!

Well, I just liked Zoran's big, bold shapes the best. Dang it! They're all good but his are excellent!

I opted for Zotika for efficiency and placement. There is more to see in each cab, and the sizeing is good.

I'm sorry Daniel, I didn't realize it went up Saturday, it's your contest so your call on the timeline. Cher - No problem. The contest seemed to have gone a bit quiet. I did not want the vote to go quiet as well, but we can bump it or whatever it takes to get a good show of voting. I offered a polling prize just to get more votes, and the votes did increase, but so far only 1 person wanted the prize. I have been thinking that it took a bit of work to enter, so I might try to arange a consolation slab for the non-winning entries. I am figuring all this out as I go.

I voted for Akansan because of the number of cabs and scenes therein, although Cher almost got me with that wide one. The clincher, for me, was that apostrophe-looking one by Akansan--- gotta like the unusual shape.

I voted for Zotika but really everyone who went to the trouble to enter deserves praise. It was a hard decision but felt the Zotika showcased the rock the best. However that is just my opinion. Dorothy

I based my vote on a combination of use of the visual detail on the slab and the wearability of the resulting cab.

While all designs were nice, I thought akansan had the most variety of shapes and showed the best scenes.

Well exit polls are favoring Zotika. 31 votes is approaching the 40 or so that name that cab contests get. We can go another day to see if anything changes.
All the comments seem good and thoughtful. Balancing two goals can be difficult. I think Shain and Raptor did get some nice scenes. I put my favorite from each in the top left corner. I think the pre-ground look may be hurting them. On the one hand neatness was not a contest criteria, but one the other a smoother finish does help the viewer better see what is being proposed.
Win, honorable mention, or spectator, I hope everyone had some fun.
Any stragglers should vote soon!

Well one more vote came in. I'm glad Shain got one.
SO, do we go another day or call the winner? I am flexiable, but want to be timely and fair too. Let me know your thoughts.
Thanks

Mostly depends on your time schedule Daniel, whichever is easiest for you. Thanks for running the contest, it was neat trying to make those decisions when I've never cabbed before.

Well I think we will call this one and name Zoran the winner. Sorry akansan, I know you were gaining - but I'm going to be pretty busy the next few days.
PM me an address and I see what it takes to ship a slab internationally.
Also, I will be pulling together a sllection of slabs or trim saw rough for the other contestants to choose from. May take a few days because I'm going to be busy. I'll post some pictures next week, and the non-winning players can choose on a 1st come 1st serve basis.
Thanks to all who participated.

That's okay! I'm glad it's going to someone who actually has all the tools to play with it properly.
