Ok here's a good one for everyone. I'm looking to help a friend identify what he found the other day. He works for the local railroad here in my area, and found a chunk of rock off the railroad line. He swore it's a meteorite, however I popped his bubble and said it's a ore.
Basically here's the deal (photo coming soon) - It's a piece about 1.25" x 2" and is 1.25" thick , and weighs a amazing 1 pound 2.6 ounces. Very dense material. He used a grinder to clean a edge and it threw sparks - However it is NOT Magnetic. The exterior is dark black, and it has a dark gray/blue tinted coating. The area where it's ground it silver, but seems to be grainy.
Any rate - Interesting stone... Any idea's? I can rule out Lead for sure as it's not soft.
Another odd thing is originally I asked if it might be something they haul on the Trains, but he said he looks at all the loads and they don't haul anything like this? But then again who know what the other dozen mile long trains haul?

Maybe this, slag,at least that was the consensus on here. I thought I was finding something special by the tracks when I found these.

More than likely slag. I see it on the railroad beds all the time. Very heavy. I think some of the railroads actually use it as ballast from time to time.
