After seeing all the great recent obsidian tumbles, I thought I would give it a try, and scrounged up all the little pieces of obsidian I could find in the garage. They are in the tumbler now. I will try to post pictures through each stage. That is of course unless they don't turn out at all, in which case I will quietly try to make this thread go away ;D

Good luck. Do you have any other sizes, they are pretty uniform so might not tumble as well as if you threw in one or two bigger chunks to go along with the rest. Not critical, just might help the load move better.

Thanks for the tips! I will see how it is looking in a couple days, and if it isn't making progress I will take out some pieces and replace with a large piece.

Here is the latest as of today. I need to figure out a better way to take pictures. The cell phone doesn't do a very good job.

Your phone may not "take great pictures", but that is killer shine! Good job!

Wow, those are wonderful and if I am following correctly, they still haven't been polished.
You're doing great! Tanya

Wow, those are wonderful and if I am following correctly, they still haven't been polished. You're doing great! Tanya You are correct. I switched them over to 400 yesterday. In the picture the rocks are wet. I think I need to get a different material for polishing. All I have is alumina oxide and tripoli. I have heard tin oxide is the best for polishing obsidian. Any recommendations?
