Wow, very cool wood! Went to the museum up there a few years ago and they had a wonderful collection of identified wood. Are you able to use it to identify your specimens? The pattern in your polished example is so nice that I'd think you could easily do an identification....Mel

The white on the outside of these rounds is a layer of volcanic ash, and calcite. This petrified wood was formed when a forest was covered by volcanic ash, then molted lava (basalt). The ash is very rich in silica, so as water percolated through the basalt, and ash the wood, in an anarobic atmosphere took up the silica and became petrified. The calcite can be removed with a soak in a mild acid such as vinegar (acetic acid). Woody
