Graves Mountain Irredescent Hematite over kyanite: After kyanite blades formed they were subsequently coated with hematite. This was exposed to flucuating water levels that caused the hematite to oxidize to different degrees to form a rainbow of irridescent color. This is an all natural specimen that was mined sometime between 1982-1986 and comes from the mine manager at graves mtn. This was inside a rock in that collection untill I gave it a good whack and out pops this! I now present it to you in all its glory:

yep, this is a natural weathering/oxidation effect that hematite sometimes displays.
I tell about this a bit and show off a car load of it just a short ways into this video.

Amazing! I've seen some of that Graves Mnt. stuff at our local show. Never believed that it was natural. Guess I know better now.

unfortunately a great percentage has been chemical treated. There is an old graves mtn back issue of the mineralogical record that documents the extraordinary colors that are possible naturally.
So it is not safe to assume that this color is natural when seen for sale.
A lot of it depends on who the seller is and who dug the material.

I just completed a trade for material from Graves Mountain. There were a couple of pieces of this material in it. Now I know what it is.

Hey DigForCrystals,
How are you doing - thanks so much for making my day. That is the single best rock photo Ive seen in years - INCREDIBLE!!! Obviously it's the colour splash - it's the semi-artificial/alien appearance that makes it so attractive, but there is something beautifully natural about it too - magical piece. The crystal structure is enhanced by that glittery sparkling coating. Nature got there first again! Thanks again for a marvelous mineral - cracking photography, astonishing specimen and an explanation too - First rate DFR!
Cheers,
Harry.
