Hi All As promised the testing out of Zinc Oxide 1 - Before 2 - After 3 - Popy Jasper ? from Tom 4 - Montrose Agate 5 - Carnelian 6 - Yellow Quartze, Black Flint, Chaldony & Amy ' 7 - Geode slice 8 - Chaldoney 9 - Amy and Agate (and a Non polished Shap Granite ?) 10 - Chaldony [glow=red,2,300] Polished using the Conrock Method [/glow] I found this Polish as good as any I have used so far , I also found it washed out of the cracks indentations Geode slice inside a lot better than TO or CO I used up a batch of prepared rocks ( stage one ) and had to add some with cracks and indentations , I also added a few Pre cuts so it gave this batch a good challenge , I think the final photo #10 of the bubbly surface on the Chaldony shows the finish off the best Your coments much appreciated Jack Yorkshire uk

Looks like it works well. Any safety concerns? I remember in the distant past hearing not to build smokers out of galvanized containers because of the zinc coating. Not sure how readily available it is in USA either.

Not totally sure on this but I believe the main toxicity from zinc oxide is inhalation of zinc oxide in gaseous form which is probably why they don't want you to use it for smokers. Don't think solid form is very toxic. Great results on the tumble. I wonder why it's not available here as a polish. May be an expense thing. Was it inexpensive there in the UK? Kind of hard to beat the cheap cost of good AO here in the US......Mel

He said in an original post he was testing it for a company from Africa and AO not readily available in UK. Be interesting if it was available for another use here and could be bought without a rock hobby mark up.

I could very easily be wrong about this, but I believe the active ingredient in Preparation H is zinc oxide...

Isn't zinc oxide what the lifeguards use on their noses? If so, don't think it is too toxic...

That was impressive, Jack. Thanks for posting the results. Now we just have to figure out how to get some in the States, assuming the price isn't outrageous. To Mel's point, the price point of AO makes it hard to beat.
Great photos, by the way.

I looked up the hardness of Zinc Oxide which is listed at 4.5 versus AO which is listed as 9. Does this mean it takes longer to produce the same results as AO?

Outstanding results Jack!
Your photos are #1 as well!
With results like that it's a shame you didn't enter the rock tumbling competition this year!!!

I was wondering, sometimes I do that too much. I googled zinc oxide and there seems to be numerous sellers of zinc oxide powder, for different uses. Would the recipe for the ZO polishing product be any different than what is out there for sale?

I could very easily be wrong about this, but I believe the active ingredient in Preparation H is zinc oxide... You are in fact pretty wrong about that- the ointment anyway. The active ingredients in Preparation H are mineral oil, petroleum, Phenylephrine HCL and shark oil. ZnO is not even an inactive ingredient, it is however used in those solid white sunscreens that nobody uses anymore. If it is used in the creme formulation it would be an inactive ingredient used for coloring.
