I believe you may have a piece of Hyalite Opal; it doesn't appear to be a Fire Agate, or a sort of Speleothem/Cave Coral.. so I'd say it's a fair bet that it's Hyalite. Either Hyalite or a fragment of a Chalcedony Rose? Here's an example of a Hyalite Opal in situ on matrix material: & a link to a write up on Hyalite: www1.newark.ohio-state.edu/Professional/OSU/Faculty/jstjohn/Hyalite-opal/Hyalite-opal.htmNICE FIND BTW! I have a specimen I scored from an estate sale on Ebay: also left untagged as far as ID goes, so I did some legwork and found the closest thing to it to be Hyalite Opal. Hope this helps with your guesswork. Here is mine:

It looks exactly like the Mexican fire agate that I have. without the fire of course. Not all fire agate has fire.

Cool fire agatey brain.
Yeah, I don't get it yet. When we spent the winter in AZ, we found chalcedony roses all over the place. Looked like fire agate without the fire. When they had coloring and possible fire, they were fire agate. I'll figure it out some day. Jo

The piece shown was mixed in with a big lot of Chalcedony roses, but the roses were all white or translucent, maybe some with a pink tinge. I'm such a newb that I can't tell if it's in it's natural state, or been carved on. Thanks everyone for all the input.

I'm such a newb that I can't tell if it's in it's natural state, or been carved on. Thanks everyone for all the input. It looks to be natural not carved chalcedony. That does look like a rock brain. I've seen some that look like yours as well as other body parts , (don't ask Sheri about her "female part" (not gonna say the "v" word) chalcedony or the male one either (this is a family friendly forum I think)..lol.) The "roses" can be all those colors and as Jo found out they can also have a little bit of color that looks like they were trying to become fire agate. The pink and fire filled are more rare at least as far as I know. It does not appear to be hyalite opal since it doesn't look clear enough. As far as I know hyalite opal looks like water bubbles on the rocks. I could be wrong though. Jo, I don't think anyone has figured that out yet so you'd be the first...lol. I think I'll think about that tomorrow..

Diane- Unfortunately, the color in the photo is deceptive, not intentionally. It's actually more cream or ivory colored, not so much pink. I hope this helps with identification. I could have photoshopped it for closer to reality, but it looked so pretty the way the photo came out. Sorry if it was misleading...

Cream or Ivory colored would still fit with Chalcedony Rose. I agree it does look pretty cool the way the photo came out. I don't have any pictures of the ones I picked up but here's one: [img src=" farm5.static.flickr.com/4142/4882718775_585bfcfd88_m.jpg" Chalcedony rose[/url] by going on going on, on Flickr

That does look like a bird, Fossilman, pretty cool. So far we have a brain and a bird...does that make a bird brain? LOL
