That's really cool picture is that in the side of a mountain? did you have to climb up to it? grilled travertine !

The crystallized rim on those slabs does remind me of some banded onyx (i.e. calcite), and the reaction with muriatic acid and the softness would make sense it if is some sort of calcite.
