Went to McDermitt for the first time this weekend. McDermitt is on the Oregon-Nevada border. It is a small town of 200 people with one motel and cafe. First off I located the trailer of a member of my rock club. He was off hunting rocks so I was on my own for the afternoon. I drove up the road and parked. Got out of my car and there was a 5lb agate. I wondered why anyone would leave such a nice agate. Started walking up the hill and noticed more and more agates. Soon I had all I could carry and headed back to car. This time I took my camera so others would believe my story on the amount of agate laying around. The agate was in many different colors of brown, black, blue, red, orange, purple ect. pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL22/559982/23831786/397360415.jpg[/IMG] The pieces were tumbling size to 200lb+. I could have loaded my van in a couple of hours. Later I met up with the other club member and looked at his haul. The next morning we set off exploring. Our goal was petrified wood and carnival agate. We found a lot of the wood that was partly opalized. The BLM limits the amount of wood that can be taken to 20lbs or one large piece a day. The better wood is found by digging under the surface. I did keep a 50lb carnival agate. Other rock at McDermitt is Serena Green and Gary Green Jasper. Also beds of orange agate, purple agate, purple cow, sagenite, nodules, opalite ect. There is miles of BLM land to explore at McDermitt. Stopped at Hampton Butte for wood, and Paulina for Pink limb casts on the way home but after McDermitt I was spoiled. Arne

I passed through there Friday and Monday on a trip to Boise, unfortunately I had no time to stop, but I think I need to make a 3-4 day trip out with McDermitt being the destination, I don't suppose you would be willing to share any tips about what roads or areas to explore out there?

I think we ought to plan a club outing there this fall, let the weather cool down just a tad so we don't all heat stroke. Anyone interested?

I would be up for another trip. Anytime after the 2nd week of Sept. should find cooler weather. Have a map showing the different agate areas. The area is a big loop gravel and clay road and passable for most vehicles in dry weather. Arne

I usually don't find out until the end of the previous month, I do know I won't be able to make the trip on the last weekends of August or September, nor the weekend of October 22nd although if you were to hang out before or after that weekend- I need to make a run to Portland on the 22nd so I might be able to do McDermitt on either side of that one...

Blatant thread Necromancy.
I'd be up for a road trip for some of those agates. Specially the purples.

LOL You already missed the trip, we did it last fall. Tony DO ANOTHER! Make it a yearly event. The "town" of McDermit can use the revenue! Paul, glad I gave you a good chuckle. Everybody needs that once in awhile!

That town needs us. All they have is an airport, a cemetary, what appears to be a small race track and a few dozen houses. I attached a satellite image of McDermitt for your review! Attachments:
