My dad found this just south of the twin cities in Minnesota. I was thinking some sort of Jasper, or maybe even something similar to a prarie agate. Maybe some sort of pertrified wood, but the skin doesn't look quite right for that. Any ideas? P1000581 by jedmonson, on Flickr P1000582 by jedmonson, on Flickr P1000583 by jedmonson, on Flickr

It appears to be a jasp/agate nodule. Probably carried down from Canada during the last ice age. Keep in mind that Lake Superior agates are found as far west as extreme eastern South Dakota. Check the farm fields around you after fall plowing for nice material. ( With the land owners permission of course ).

I found some material similiar to that a while back....Val down at Princeton told me it was Petrified Stromatolite.....could be the same stuff. The matrix tho, looks like a chert matrix, so I dunno that for sure
