really enjoying the forums here, thought it might be helpful if there was a compiled list of what people use for lap pads/mounts
after reading some things people mentioned (I forget who) getting a plastic cutting board, carpet, tiles etc, well anyway if you have time please post
what you have used
where you got it
and how you like it, thanks.

Not sure what you want but both Inland and Ameritool are using 1/4" acrylic ("Plexi Glass") as backers. You can probably buy scraps from any glass shop. The old home made polish laps were most commonly made with a plywood disc, foam disc and either carpet or leather over. Anything you make has to be flat, drilled precisely and balanced to avoid vibration. Or you can buy 8" plastic backers for $20, buy some diamond lap "toppers", and start grinding.

yeah that's kind of what I meant, there's a post with pictures of someone cutting out a disc from a cutting board, others have mentioned using marine carpet, those ideas all where in the same category, figured if they where all compiled into one thread it would be helpful.

Don't think anyone wants to take on a project like that. It would take many weeks digging through thousands of postings, and many more weeks compiling them into some sense of order.

I think it's a good idea. People don't have to dig through old posts. Just mention things they currently use or have used. I, myself, have used storebought plexi backing plates with diamond polishing pads; homemade wood backing plates covered with foam and a top layer of leather; straight wood charged with diamond paste, and a metal lap disc charged with a grit/RV antifreeze slurry mixture.
Currently looking into finding some diamond sandpaper sheets to make my own polishing pads, and making my own plexi backing plates. -Mike
