That's beautiful. So how does a person tell it's whale bone? Cell structure?

That looks great. I'm curious about the dino and whale bone difference too.

OK, simple answer about the bone ID is it does pretty much look like dino bone ( I have some Alberta Canada dino bone that looks identical to me) but there are supposedly no dino bone bearing rock formations where the whalebone comes from. The rock this bone comes from is supposed to be about 40+ million years younger than those that hold dino bone.
Now the question that always kind of bugs me is, these same beaches are full of jasper similar to Stone Canyon Jasper that is supposedly a Jurassic period chert and I would equate that period to dinosaurs *L*. I guess though that these chert formations are from ocean oozes so would not be expected to have dino bone. I have heard of bones from aquatic plesiosaurs being found in the central California foothills but do not know if the bones were agatized.
Guess you have to listen to the experts though and they say this is whalebone. The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History has a whole skeleton assembled from it and I've dug a lot of non agatized specimens from Sharktooth Hill by Bakersfield, that look very similar in cell structure except they are not good cutting material...Mel
