Simple question: How many inches (or MM) should there be between the level of the rocks (turned off of course) and top of the cone in the middle of the barrel? Instructions say "above" the line around the barrel. The line is two inches below the top of the barrel. The top of the cone is an inch above the line.

I always fill even with the top of the cone. As long as you have the "cyclonic action" going on, you're there!

I usually fill my UV-18 to the top of the cone. The height is not critical; the movement is. If you turn it on and aren't getting good churn in 20 seconds or so, you may need to change the mix of sizes or add more rocks. If either of those is off, the rocks just sort of sit and hammer against each other. There's a YouTube video somewhere that shows the desired movement.

Yep, my vote goes for to the top of the cone too. Any less, and the action does not seem to be as good. I always run a lot of small stones in the load too as that also seems to help the action and cushion the load against that knocking together....Mel

Randy, Chuck, Mel -- Thanks! I saw that video so I know what it's supposed to look like. I did fill it up to a couple inches below the top of the cone and turned it on -- dry and no grit -- and it did start to cyclone, but not as vigorously as in the video. But that was without water, and I haven't yet added ceramic to fill out the proper mix of sizes.
Chuck, are we fellow Minneapolitans? I'll send a PM.

I think most brands of vibe tumblers are designed to run full.

Click on the image and it will open Photobucket in another browser window, and play the video there. Followed Biker Randy's instructions. Used maybe 4 tbls 500 grit. Added water with a spray bottle. How does that look?

Yes, that is exactly the way it should look. You'll need to keep an eye on it for the first 12-24 hours; that's when it starts to gum up and slow down.

Jack, I've seen that video a few times, and as recently as last week. Now I have my own little video!
Chuck, Yes, I've sprayed it about 4 times now when it started getting too pasty, and beginning to slow down just a bit. The worst was about 3 or 4 hours after I started it, but it was still churning -- it has never stopped churning. Just gave it a couple spritzes 15 minutes ago.
