I was going through the buckets at my club's shop and came across a small pile of opalite that I hadn't seen before. Does anybody recognize this stuff? Today at the estate sale I just went to, I came across another piece, which makes me think it's local to Cal, but nobody seems to know it. I'm thinking Black Mountain by Opal Mountain as a hunch, as the two colors I've seen are reddish and greenish, and Scouts Cove over there used to produce opal of those colors, but that is pure guesswork. I'm sticking it here as it is a pretty material, and if I can get it ID"ed, I'll alter the heading to represent its provenance. thanks for looking: As a side note - if you have ANY material from Black Mountain or Opal Mountain that you can take a picture of, i'd appreciate seeing it, as I have not seen material from either of those sites, and would like to. For those interested - this was tentatively identified as Gabbs Opalite with opalized wood.
Any thoughts?

I'd lean more towards the Black Mtn/Opal Mountain region myself, at least for the brecciated piece. I found some tiny pieces similar to that on a trip years ago. I've hunted Gabbs and the wood opal I found there was not nearly that colorful, being mostly white, gray, brown and black with very distinct wood grain and fairly heavy fracturing. Your pics look much more like vein material than they do opalized wood.....Mel

Did the rock in the fourth photo (white with reddish inclusions) also come from the same bucket? Oddly, it looks like some of the material I pulled from a wash north of Last Chance Canyon. I cut some small slabs from it last weekend. I'll shoot over a pic to you later for comparison.
