Andrew was off last week so I took the day off on Friday and he and I headed up to Yermo for a quick day rockhounding. We left the house at 7:00 and were at the dig site by 9:30 or so. Just a few pics and we haven't had a chance to sort through the materials, yet. Right now, they're soaking in some tubs out back to remove the dirt. We did manage to collect enough for six MFBs and used them as "grab boxes" for the kids at our Bible Study ("one box per family, please" ... I wasn't about to collect enough for sixteen boxes ) Can't remember who gave me that idea but "THANKS" to whomever it was . I was without my wife's Pilot that day (it was in the body shop due to a fender bender accident) so we contented ourselves with parking at the intersection by the entrance to the "Calico Early Man" site and roamed the area to the west of the intersection. Actually, most of our largest/best pieces came directly from the dirt road. The maintenance tractors push a lot of stuff around, exposing some of the larger agates. "Roadhounding" is I think what (Mel) Sabre52 and (Gary) GR call it. Snack time: Tub one: Tub two: Close ups to come. Thanks for looking. Paul

More the reason to buy yourself a F550 4x4 pick up to make all those kids at your Bible Study happy. Easter is coming up!
Nice haul Paul.

Paul, I told you we would leave some for you guys. OK here's a question, Do you keep your trips in bin's marked and dated? My garage is starting to tilt from what we picked up on our trip. Things are also getting a little mixed up. The first tumble was of rocks picked up off the floorboards of the Scion. Most of them were the last second grabs as Tina was saying "Get back into the car".
Larry, Why stop at a F550. I've been watching Gold Rush Alaska and seeing those bulldozers . . . . .

Driving down the freeway, I see those Wrangler Unlimiteds or 4x4 Pickups and keep thinking I need one of those. So, hopefully, one day... My Intrepid is still managing 29 MPG on the freeway so I've nothing to complain about for a 4,000 lbs car with a V6. But I keep wishing! Bill - yes, I keep them in boxes or baggies, tagged and marked so I know what's what. Of course, Barbara just looks at it and says, "oh, look, more rocks." Yeah, I love that area in and around Calico. Actually, up and down highways 15 and 40 are great rockhounding areas. Beautiful areas. Thanks for checking out the photos. I'll try and get some photos of the pile tomorrow after church.

Paul, Larry, what day are you guys going to the "Tailgate" in Victorville? I want to see what a real rockhounding gathering looks like.

We're going to head up on Saturday, march 10 although we probably won't be up there until lunch time or so. Both boy's have games that morning so we won't be leaving until around 11:00 AM. Let's plan on meeting up there! Paul

Paul, That sounds great. Other than the gathering, is there a collecting area there? It's not like I need more material right now. Bill

Thanks for the field trip. Looks like some good finds. I do the same thing as you mentioned by looking at the sides of graded roads. Might as well let the equipment do the work! jeff

Jeff - yeah, we sort of realized, somewhat be-latedly, that the maintenance tractors had done a lot of work for us! Duh... Bill - Check the Gem Trails of SoCal book on page 100: Stoddard Wells. I've never been to the location but supposedly you can get some nice marble. It sounds like a bit of a hike and I'm not certain if my boys (much less Barbara) will be up to that Photos attached to Part Three of the "Yermo" adventures with Andrew and Nathaniel: forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=locations&thread=50880&page=1

The Stoddard wells location has MANY marble/onyx sites. Tricolor onyx is the farthest east and one of the nicest I have seen out there. I haven't made it that far east, I keep finding enough stuff before getting over there!
Paul if ya wanna meet up sometime on a trip out there hit me up! I love that region.

Hey, Shotgunner, that would be great! There's enough of us in SoCal that we could get a field trip together. I've never had a chance to do the marble/onyx sites in that area so it would be nice to check it out.
