Since Southern California was under a shallow sea in the geologic past, we have many fossils. Many times, fossils are found when the footing is dug for a building, or a road cut is made. I'm sure many contractors dread finding whale bones, etc., as it generally means construction delays while a team from the museum comes and digs them out (if it's a big enough find). The SD Natural History Museum has lots of these fossils, so many that most are in drawers in the back and are not on display. I imagine they are mostly used for studies.
Cathy - the clam cast was found by my sister's boyfriend at the time, while working on a job site. Best thing he ever gave me!
