Having read about Inland problems with the motors, I was reluctant to try to purchase one. However, they are the only Cabbing machine I can find in the UK, that is affordable. To buy from the USA faces enormous shipping costs plus a 20% Value added tax on arrival in the UK. Otherwise I'd save up and get a Titan. I contacted the Inland agent in the UK some three months ago and was told none are available as he was waiting for a new batch arriving. Yesterday I again contacted them and was told they were still waiting for a shipment. When I suggested I could have swum to America and back in the time I had been waiting, he informed me Inland were sorting out a problem with the motors and none would be available until the problem had been rectified. Given this information, I'm interested to find out the opinion Of the Inland flat lap (8" not the all in one) if fitted with a reliable motor. Would it suit someone like me starting out with this hobby?

I have used the inland 8" flat lap and I would say that if there were no motor issues its a great choice for getting into cabbing. Other than the motor issue the only other problem I have seen is stripping out the set screw that holds the flat lap discs to the shaft because it gets taken out and put back every time you change from one grit disc to the next. Its plenty powerful and the variable speed option is nice. The rock club I go to is only 5 miles from the Inland factory and they get a lot of feedback right from the source so I will ask around to see if anyone at the club heard that rumor about a motor fix.

I just got the motor back from Inland on my swap-top because it had issues. I hope whatever it is they did fixed the problem. It took them almost a month to get it back to me. But they did repair it free. I read on the Inland website that both the 6" and 8" use the same motor. The 8" sells for almost $100 more and has same motor? Why not just buy 8" accessories? I bought mine used so I don`t know all of the options available.

The price difference is primarily the difference in 6" laps vs. 8".

My only problem (so far) with the 8" Inland flat lap was with the water valve. The first time I turned the water off, the valve pulled completely out of the plastic water tank. I cured the problem by substituting a tropical fish tank air control valve. A quick and inexpensive fix.
Chuck, you shouldn't have to completely remove the set screw from the little arbor adapter. Just loosen it enough to slide the adapter off. I suspect that you cross threaded it and stripped the threads.

If they use the same motor and 8" accessories will fit on a 6" unit then why is there a price difference in the base unit? It would seem that they are the same product for a hundred bucks more.

Sorry should have been clear that the Inland units I have used are at our rock club so they get used by a variety of people and cross threading wasn't the issue I think it was more of an over torquing issue that was stripping the hex out of the setscrew that you have to loosen and re tighten each time. That may never be an issue when properly used. I read a thread somewhere that showed somebody fixing that issue by replacing the set screw with a bolt that stuck out but I could not imagine using it with a bolt there because I have hit that arbor with my cab a few times and a bolt sticking out would not have ended well.

I belong to the same club as Chuck and I know some of the people at Inland. I wish I would have seen this before last weekend because I seen one of the gentle men at our club show. As for motor problems I know years ago they had some issues but that was quite some time ago. Some people will pick apart the machine and as it does have its problems it can be made to work and is a good starting machine for the cost. I posted a long time back some things you can do to modify the machine to make it work better.
The motor is the same for both the 6" and 8" machines the tops are different to accommodate the different size laps and the 8" laps are more expensive then the 6". I will mention the UK problem to some of the inland guys when I see them next and if I get any info I'll share.
