Hi, yeah, rotary will do the same thing I think -- wouldn't think those would be good tumbling candidates. Glad it is confirmed! ;-) The little druzy pieces I'm picking up are destined to be curiosity pieces for the windowsill at work, or gifts for the neighbors' children.
Although I have to say, my ideas of what is an interesting enough rock to inhabit the windowsill are changing fast these days!

man. I need to go out there this weekend. Maybe there will be some hot lady with bruised legs out there too. lol
I am bringing my wheelbarrow. When full I'll walk it back to the truck. If I fill it enough then our friends east of the colorado river can have some to play with.

If you're careful with your route, a wheelbarrow just might work, lol! Not too many plants, it's pretty barren! One of those bucket carts like LarryS has (I forgot the name, something like Dorrel Cart or something) might just work.
I forgot to say, wear gloves. That gives you several extra hours of working time, past when the rocks get too hot to touch with your bare hand! ;-) Still want to go? lol. Oh wait, you live in Chino, you're used to heat.

@bluesky I used to hunt reptiles in the Pisgah Lava Beds right there. The Chuckwalla are black! The Panamint Rattlesnakes have black saddles on a pink body and the Side Blitch lizard males are black with sky blue spots during breeding season.
Suffice to say I know exactly what to expect out there.
My wheelbarrow is two wheeled with big bouncy pneumatic tires. Should be perfect for the desert pavement.

What fun! Like Helen said, we'll have a field trip up here in Norcal sometime soon. You found some beautiful rock, I loved your photojournal!
I so have the itch to go rockhounding...

About Mary Francis Strong, and her directions. Rarely will you ever go wrong finding a site using her directions if you do one thing. Start form the highway she did. For example, if you are trying to find any site near I-40 just remember it was not there when she was, but Route 66 was. Start your odometer from 66 no matter which side of 40 it is on.........Mitchell did not compensate for this and only copied her maps.

Woody, before I moved away from Cal., I always took Rt.66. If for no other reason than it's a more interesting road to travel. Unlike Hwy. 40, you can pull off almost anywhere to take a quick walk in the desert. I made many interesting finds by just heading out and looking around.

That's one terrific write up. Sounds like you had a blast and the rocks you found are incredible. We went right near there on our honeymoon last year but didn't we were that close.

I grew up in Alhambra during the 60's & 70's and my neighbor was a bridge engineer for CalTrans and was in charge of the bridges all along I-40. His son was my best friend. His whole bedroom was wall papered using USGS Topo maps, a total map freak. He talked his mom into making her 66 VW into a Baja bug. We chopped the fenders, etc and hopped up the motor. My girlfriends father had a 59 bug I modified. Life hasn't been the same since! We advanced up to Jeeps and owned them ever since. We always went to the East Mojave through the back roads, 29 Palms and practically lived out there. We even built a cabin in the Granite Mountains, north of Amboy. Amboy had many gas stations, along with all the other tiny rail road towns out there. I-40 killed them all. In the 80's I managed a large trucking company shop and hired a old timer diesel mechanic who's uncle use to own Amboy. The uncle's name was Buster and he owned many mining claims that all went bust. During the weekends that mechanic use to wrench at the gas stations and he'd make more money on weekends than he did during the week in LA. They'd screw everyone who broke down out there. Don't like the cost? Walk! Type of mechanics you'd hear about that carried ice picks in their back pocket while they checked your oil? Yep, you'd be broken down miles down Route 66 and have to be towed back for insanely expensive repairs!

What you need is one of those ATV's to load up with rock! I never had so much fun than when I went with RTH'ers years ago to Burro Creek in AZ for rockhounding~ Jamie could spot the most amazing rock going 5 mph across the desert...

Hey Larry, ever pull into Amboy to gas up when the bikers were making their annual trip to Arizona ? My then new wife and I did one spring. She was scared to death, and wouldn't get out of our old GMC Jimmy. Talking to the old timers in the gas station was where I learned a little of the old Black Jack silver mine nearby.

Maybe you can rent one... but you'd have to be able to rent the trailer to get it out there too. It would make rock hunting a BREEZE, you wouldn't be limited to what you could haul back yourself either:P. LOL!

Hey Don,
Didn't see any bikers out there. Think your wife was scared of them, you're lucky she didn't see us! Gang of almost hippie type long haired guys, butt naked just wearing just a 357 mag ammo belt, boots, oh.....a cowboy hat to keep the sun off our faces! Playing Jimi Hendrix & Led Zeppelin on our 8 track tapes while romping around the Mojave Desert! Yeah the Bevis & Butthead generation now days don't know how to entertain themselves except play on their smart phones. I met my first wife out there near Kelso. Wished I would have left her there!

Hey, nothing wrong with that, (except the first wife). I still have long hair. Hasn't been cut since about 94, and I still listen to Hendrix and Led Zeppelin, but my favorite is Janis Joplin. Got her bookmarked on Jango.

Oh yeah, I still listen to all the old classic rock. We actually weren't hippies. We were and still are a bunch of conservative red necks. We just played the "love & peace" card around the women who wore flowers in their hair. Hey, it worked!
A little bit of Route 66 trivia. During 1963, the government was considering using up to 22 nuclear bombs to blow away a path through the Bristol Mountains for the I-40, right next to the Cady's. What stopped them is the Russians signed the 1963 nuclear test ban treaty. Gee, all that pretty Lavic jasper would have been blown right to our front door steps!
