Hi all. I found this batch of rocks while scuba diving off the coast of CA. Was wondering if anybody might have any ideas about what they might be. I cut and cabbed the flat one. It was extremely soft, maybe a 3 or 4 but took a nice polish (even with a rank beginner on the other end of the polish). It didn't seem to undercut or orangepeel, and I'm sure with my zero experience polishing, if it was going to, I would never have been able to prevent it. So the different colors may be similar hardness. However, a close up shot of one of the rocks (not the one I cabbed) clearly shows different materials. In case it is helpful, I found other rocks with visible elemental copper (I think that's the right phrase - copper that looks like copper, not like green) all through them in the same area. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Hi bluesky,
they look like marble or dolomite to me.

Definitely a nice cab, Susan. Got me on the ID ... I'm pretty poor with that. If the rock looks cool, it's usually coming home with us

Thanks! I was happy with it. Yup, I think probably serpentine. The cab isn't quite as yellow as the closeup picture shows. Easy to work with, I was pleasantly surprised, thought it would fall apart.

Looks like serpentine to me to. California coast is loaded with it. State rock. Lovely, cab! Lots of scuba divers around here also find jade.

Heck, you dive too?? Sweet, just don't be so busy looking for rocks, you bump into a shark! (me, who fears sharks in swimming pools and was at an impressionable age when Jaws came out, lol)

Haha, yeah, due to various circumstances this year I was lucky and get to dive almost every Sunday all summer. I always hope to see sharks -- our sharks here are so quiet and cute -- they're called horn sharks. They just lay there in the sand and hope you'll go away so they can continue their nap. Let's see if I can find a picture on google. Here ya go: They're usually about a foot long. If you tried really hard you might be able to get them to bite you on the thumb - but that's all that would fit in their mouth. www.sdnhm.org/archive/kids/sharks/shore-to-sea/horn.html

Aw, they are cute! They look like catfish, so they're okay.
