So I have been lurking on this board for a few weeks now. My family and I have just now gotten into rockhounding as a great weekend activity to get outdoors and enjoy each others company. We took a trip to Burro Creek in AZ last weekend looking for Agates and what not. Due to not having any idea on what to look for we struck out on the agate hunt but found some rather interesting specimens. This piece is the most interesting. imgur.com/a/K4gIB Does anyone have any idea what it is?

Sorry, couldn't help myself! I don't know what it is, but it is interesting looking and I can see why you picked it up!!! Just wanted to say welcome to the forum:).

Burro Creek Pastelite, the hard sections do cut and polish up well, the soft sections will gum up your saw and your wheels, it also comes in lots of different colors.
Welcome to the board.................Tony

That's ok Helen. Hopefully someone will be able to give me some clues. I have been told everything from chalcedony, to agate, to chert. The rock is deceptively heavy and extremely hard all over. We were not able to even put a dent in it in the field but I haven't taken a saw to it yet.

Catmandewe: Pastelite is a new one for me. There doesn't seem to be much about this chunk of rock that is soft. Anything else I can do to further this identification? Rockingthenorth: Jasper is also one I haven't heard before. I am hoping to be able to take a saw to it this weekend.

Dantrag, if Tony tells you it's a pastelite, it's a pastelite. Burro Creek is the location it came from.
The man's got his own mountain in his backyard, that he built there rock by rock of the most breathtaking rocks in the world, and if he says that's what it is, I'd be inclined to believe it at face value:).
