I read a few people wondering about timing out due to inactivity. When you log in - theres a small box beneath the password which enables you to stay logged in from between 15 mins to Forever. If you want to stay logged in for another "counter dash meeting" then pls try setting this to a higher value - that should sort it out. Regarding people who logged in and could not see their names listed at the bottom - or the counter is "missing" - please can you post a screen dump so I can see the scree with the counter missing - I can pass this to proboards. Cheers Hope this helps a bit. Mark

Mark - I'm actually set to be logged in "forever", but if the screen is not the active screen on my computer - if I'm working in another program, have another browser window open that I'm using instead, or the screen saver kicks in - then proboards no longer considers me "online". The minute I switch back to the browser window with RTH in it, then I'm considered online again.
I can set up a little test later today to see how long I'm considered online if I just leave the window open with no screen saver...

Hi there - its a definate fiddle we are trying - I can understand ProBoards will quite rightly want to automatically disconnect any connections which arent being actively used in terms of people entering messages.
It is in their resource interests on a large scale and a fair cop without doubt.
Can I ask a stupid question?
How do you know that "proboards no longer considers me "online"." - if your screen saver is on?
What can you see? Is there a message or something showing?
The reason Im asking is that im a bit confused.
Im under the impression that if any application (screen saver, other browser or any other program) placed your RTH application into the background - then you should still be logged in - and indeed - it should be true to say that you are also still visibly logged in to other members also using the board.
Let me know the results of your test - Id much appreciate any insight into this.
I strongly suspect that if I was logged in - and you were also logged in at the same time - when your PC went off doing something else - I would still see you as logged in.
I wonder what ProBoards are up to - could be something to do with other people not "seeing themselves" in the list - even though they are logged in.......
Laters and Best Regards Mark

I read another post asking about the count and whether it was related to the Chatroom - this one is answered "no". The count on the main page of this board isnt related in anyway to the chatroom - to increment the count on the board - you have to log into the board. I was wondering whether some peeps had logged into the chatroom - via the link on the board (but not logged into the board) - and could not see themselves logged in on the board - a possibility. in summary cos Im waffling - the board and chatroom are completely unrelated. I saw another question asking whether the chat room is part of proboards. No - proboards provide the systems for the message board - the chatroom is just a small freebie one I found and put up a couple of years ago. Hope these pointers answer a few queries. Cheers

Mark, There is definitely some kind of automatic thing that makes you appear to be not online if you aren't actively posting/browsing. I you look at the second page of the thread "9 PM PARTY", I made a post that said I had to run but was going to leave myself connected in case the numbers climbed up again. All I did was walk away from my computer and leave everything up and running. Fourteen minutes later, there is a post from LCARS, noting that about 10 minutes after my post, my name disappeared from the list of people online. When I came back to my computer an hour or two later, I just moved my mouse to get rid of the screensaver, and there I was right back in RTH. So I was never really disconnected, but about 10 minutes after I stopped posting, my name disappeared from the list of "users online". -Don

I've checked on other machines when I've had the board up on my machine. We've two computers at home, I logged in on mine, left it alone for about twenty minutes, then checked on my sister's computer to see if the board showed me as online. It didn't. I went back to my computer, changed pages on the board, and it then showed me as online on my sister's computer.

Rollingstone and Akansan - that proves a point then and somewhere ProBoards must be saving some resources by doing this - it may even be as simple as saving bandwidth by not transmitting the members names who are not constantly active in the foreground.
I cant say I blame them it must cost a furtune to run as many boards as they do.
Thanks for the info - I was unable to test this as thoroughly as you guys have.
Cheers Mark.

Yeah someone asked where I went and I have mine set to stay logged in for 6 hrs and all I'd done is walk away for awhile too. In my mind I was still on but apparently not when it went to screen saver.

Hey Mark, I have multiple computers online most of the time, so I just created a new id and signed on with another computer. What everyone says is pretty much true. If I sign in, let my screen saver come on, sign on with another computer, my original signon is not there. Actually, I believe that you disappear for other reasons as well. For example, if you are typing up a post, you don't show up as being signed on. At least you didn't back when I tried this. It's kind of funny though, if I sign on to three computer with the same name, I show up as being signed in three times. Go figure. Ron
