Hi, y'all! Wanted to ask your advices on using diamond paste of varying grits on leather. I know that some members use diamond paste with food silicone spray on leather pads and have beautiful results with their cabs, and wondered if anyone has tried using olive oil or any other medium instead? Cannot find the food silica spray anywhere except online since our Ace Hardware shop closed it's doors for business and Home Depot doesn't carry it in their store. Thanks!

Right, silicon spray is the stuff. Silicon spray lubricant can be found at Home Depot next to the WD40, Called "Blaster" or something. Also can be found at any auto parts store. Even WalMart carries it. If not with the WD40 I've found it in the RV section as "slide out lube".

Many thanks, y'all, for your expertise!! Read the MSDS on the garage door lubricant and wondered if it would be safe to use indoors? Hi, FrogandBearCreations, I've been using olive oil on the diamond pads and didn't even think about it going rancid, lol.  Thanks for your suggestion on the light mineral oil.

The garage door lube is fine. It only takes the smallest spritz un the leather, a can should last for years.

Thank you, Lee!! Had to settle for the light mineral oil to use instead and could only find it in a gallon, lol. Found it in the equine section at Tractor Supply.

I don't know it for a fact but I think that oil saturation with mineral oil will have a negative affect on your leather. Keep the mineral oil for saw oil.

Yes, I know from a past life that oil dissolves leather over time.

Hi Gingerkid, Welcome to RTH.
I have not used leather pads yet but your post is helping me understand more about using them. Regarding silicone spray. If you have a local Ma & Pa candle supply shop they will most likely have silicone spray. I picked up a large bottle of it here at a candle shop. I'm not in front of it but the label color is salmon in color has has lasted years with other hobby stuff I use for it. Hope that helps. Matt

Oh wow, lol, Lee and John, sure wish I knew about the light mineral oil not best for use on leather pads since it will dissolve the leather over time. May have to use it for the time being though since I have a gallon of it and it was a bit expensive and have a couple of extra leather pads that I could use when I purchase the silicone spray. Thanks, Lee, for suggesting to use it in the saw instead. It is supposed to be used to give to horses, livestock, and dogs for relief of obstruction or impaction of the intestinal tract. Hi, Matt, and thank you for the warm welcome and suggestion about seeing if there may be a candle shop in our area that may carry the silicone spray. There is a store in the mall that has lots of candles; maybe they'll have some of it.

When I get home from work, I'll pull it out and see what the brand is on the spray. It may be a cheap item with shipping

It is "silicon" not "silicone". Silicone is a sealant. You will find silicon spray easily anywhere lubricants are sold. Home Depot, auto parts, WalMart, RV supplies, hardware store. It is a non petroleum based lubricant and very useful for lubing anything where you don't want oil film collecting dirt.

Thank you, Matt! Sorry for the misspelling, John, lol. Saw the garage door lubricant at Tractor Supply for around 5 bucks/can.

Some of the garage door lubes are a silicon based grease. Not sure if it will work as well as the regular spray.

Sure wish I had researched a bit more on the "horse laxative," lol, and it's use/effects on leather. As mentioned, it's inadvisable to use light mineral oil on leather. The mineral oil will saturate the leather and deteriorate it, nor is olive oil good to use on leather. Will have to wait to purchase anything else.

I think the "Blaster" or something like that at Home Depot is $4 or so and a tall can. I use it for many things around home. It is in the hardware section next to the WD 40 at my local store.

Hi, John, thanks again! Looked around in our utility room and found a can of B'laster (as seen on TV, lol) that is a copolymer penetrant used as a lubricant, and for stopping rust, corrosion, etc.. It states on the can that it does not evaporate and may affect some plastics. Wondered if this is the spray you suggested to use?

See if it says silicon spray lubricant. I think there are a couple of different Blaster products. I looked but what I have with me is a different brand.

Checked on the B'laster products website, and the can we have is the PB spray and not the silicon lube spray. Will see if we can pick up a can of the B'laster silicon lube from Home Depot or Tractor Supply later this week. Thanks again, John! Is the silicon lube spray with diamond on leather safe to use with opals?
